Minimizing the Risk of High Return Investing | Penny Stocks

Minimizing the Risk of High Return Investing

Requirements of High Return Investing

High Return InvestingHigh return investing involves high risk levels. If you want to reap a high yield quickly, you will need to be willing to expose yourself to more risk than typical investments require. There are certain qualities that you need to possess as an investor to navigate in these riskier areas of the stock market successfully.

Most high return investing involves day trading. Day trading is the practice of buying stocks with the intent of selling them within a few hours. Traders are dealing with new and reconstructed companies that hold a great deal of risk. While very few of these companies will survive to prosper in the long term, most of them will experience some peaks in stock values. Day traders hope to capitalize on rapid growth, while selling the stock before its value crashes.

?What You Need for High Return Investing

There are 3 key requirements to succeed at high return investing. These requirements include education, common sense, and bravery. You will need to be well informed before entering the world of day trading. Intense research into companies and trends is necessary before you consider purchasing your first share. You should know what trends typically precede a major surge in value, as well as what signs to look for before a significant dip in value.

Common sense is also critical if you want to achieve dependable returns. It is always tempting to hold out for more profit before selling a trade. You need to have the self control to stick to your strategy if it is working well for you. Do not be lured into breaking your strategy by the temptation of more money on specific trades.

Any day trader will need to possess a final characteristic in order to become involved in these investments?bravery. You will need to be both smart and gutsy to make money through day trading. High return investing requires many similar elements of traditional investing, as well as a few extras.

Darvish to make March 7 Cactus League start

Yu Darvish

updated 7:20 p.m. ET Feb. 27, 2012

SURPRISE, Ariz. - Yu Darvish faced two Texas Rangers minor leaguers in a spring training practice session Monday. On March 7, he will face big league hitters from another team for the first time.

The Rangers said Darvish will get the start against the San Diego Padres in Peoria, Ariz. He would likely pitch two innings.

The Rangers signed Darvish, a 25-year-old right-hander who was a dominant pitcher for seven years in Japan, to a six-year, $56 million contract on Jan. 18. With the posting money, the Rangers paid more than $107 million for Darvish, who was 18-6 with a 1.44 ERA and 276 strikeouts last year with Hokkaido.

Darvish threw 34 pitches on Monday to Mike Bianucci and Vince DiFazio, who have not played above Class AA. Bianucci said the two talked about going deep off Darvish in batting practice, but it did not happen.

"It would have been great to do it, but a guy with a movement like that you're just trying to put a good swing on it especially with him," Bianucci said. "He's not going to make too many mistakes where you can get the ball out of the ball park."

DiFazio said Darvish was "very impressive."

"I'm just happy I made contact a couple of times," said Bianucci, who hit .232 last season for Myrtle Beach. "I saw a pretty good firm sinker, low 90s, and he backed it up with the same velocity, but a splitter. It was pretty nasty. He didn't tip it at all. It was pretty hard to pick up. He threw me a pretty nasty slider. It looked like a fastball out of his hands. By the time I started my swing, it was almost in the dirt. I have to give him that one. He doesn't make too many mistakes."

Bianucci, who went to Auburn and hit 30 home runs last season for Frisco in the Texas League, said everything Darvish threw had "a lot of late, late movement."

"I noticed he never backed up the same pitch twice," Bianucci said. "That breaking ball I swung through, it's got such good movement, where it starts off high and looks like it is going to stay up a little bit. It almost looks like an illusion. It stops three quarters of the way and just falls."

While early in camp, most clubs want their pitchers throwing about 80-90 percent, Darvish said he was working at "120" percent.

"It's not so much of a workout of throwing certain pitches, but I was more concerned about how my body worked and how I felt and taking it from last time," Darvish said through an interpreter. "I was very satisfied how with how it worked today."

Jeff Andrews, the Rangers pitching coach in Frisco said he was not surprised that Darvish was amped up.

"The interesting thing he was still in the mode of telling guys what's coming and you still didn't see many good swings off him," Andrews said. "The hitter knew what was coming and you still didn't see a lot of hard contact, which is a credit to Yu."

Google Fiber just got better? Big G asks for permission to provide video service to Kansas City

Here we thought the citizens of Kansas City couldn't get any more fortunate after being chosen by Google to get a fiber optic gigabit network. Turns out, Google Fiber may be bringing more than just web access, as the company has asked the state of Missouri to allow it to deliver video services as well. We first heard about Big G's possible foray into pay-TV late last year, as the company was in talks with various content providers to see if it could make it happen. Given this official move towards becoming a video provider in America's heartland, we'd say those conversations must have gone fairly well. Either that, or the folks in Kansas City will be watching a whole lot of YouTube's new niche content.

Cats Vs Dogs: Which Make the Better Pets? | News, Featured Ads ...

3689487851 7cde709ff0 z Cats Vs Dogs: Which Make the Better Pets?

The Cats Vs Dogs controversy has gone on for thousands of years, ever since they were domesticated. Which makes the best pet? The answer depends largely on the owner?s personality and requirements for animal companionship. We have owned both and have made a few observations based on our experiences.

Dogs are intensely loyal to the people who feed them. They can be hostile to perceived ?invaders,? and a goodly number of them have shown a willingness to put their own lives on the line to protect their owners. The downside to this behavior is that they demand lots of attention. An owner can sit and scratch a dog?s ears for hours and still receive a hurt look from the animal when it?s time to do something else. Cats, although also attention seekers, seem much more aloof and independent. Just don?t expect them to be there for you if a burglar breaks in. An intelligent, well trained dog makes a great hiking companion. Cats couldn?t care less. This is why the owner?s preferences are an important part of the Cats Vs Dogs debate.

Cats are complete carnivores, and can digest only meat. (You may have seen a cat eating green grass, but that was probably because its stomach was already upset by something else.) Dogs, like people, are omnivores able to metabolize a variety of foods. The difference is in the body chemistry of the two species. The bottom line when considering Cats Vs Dogs is this: although some dogs may develop a taste for some cat foods, the two types of food are not interchangeable.

The biggest factor in choosing between Cats Vs Dogs may be the environment of the prospective owner. Do not try to keep a large dog in a small apartment, even if the landlord allows it. You will all be miserable as a result. Cat urine smells worse than dog urine, is more likely to occur indoors and must be dealt with. Dogs are not adept at hunting mice, so rodent control is generally left up to cats, who will also catch lizards, birds and young rabbits. In a rural setting, however, be aware that cats are susceptible to being picked off by owls (yes, owls) and other predators.

Obayashi To Build Space Elevator By 2050

Look, ultimately you can't know if a technology is a good idea without actually building the tech, full scale, and spending the time and money to create revised versions to fix the major problems.

After you do that, some technologies are still a dog, no matter how you try to hide it. Nuclear power is an instance of that : sure it works, but the risk of catastrophe overshadows everything, and means that if you try to build and run a reactor everything costs too much because of the dangers. In the long run, nuclear is not feasible because other technologies will keep getting cheaper.

I feel a space elevator is a dog for a similar fundamental reason : there's one 36,000 km high structure.

Any serious failure to a manufacturing defect along 36,000 km of cable, and you lose every last dime invested in the project. (not to mention the falling cable might cause some nasty problems). If someone ever wants to attack a space elevator, it's a perfect terrorism target. One homemade cruise missile (in 2050, I suspect making a cruise missile won't be much harder than RC airplanes are today. Heck, some garage tinkerers already have done similar projects) and the ENTIRE elevator falls.

Not to mention laser fire, railgun fire, bad weather, etc etc. There's a lot of things and it only has to fail at one point.

Furthermore, you have to complete the elevator project before it is worth anything. Invest all that money to FINISH the cable, you can't get incremental results. And this multi-billion dollar structure (realistically probably hundreds of billions) has a rather limited cargo capacity : one load of passengers a week is NOT a rapid movement to space.

So, no. It's an idea that has somehow gained traction, but it is most likely a non-starter.

I propose a much simpler idea : rather than use lasers on the ground to transmit power to the elevator climber car, scale up those laser arrays a few orders of magnitude to the point that they can vaporize propellant off the bottom of the spacecraft. Pulse the beams right, and planar shockwaves will be created, giving net thrust without any kind of nozzle.

Advantages :
? ? 1. Ablative Laser propulsion doesn't require anything in the spacecraft in the way of aerospace hardware but a small instrument package to report attitude and accelerations back to the ground. Gyroscopes for stabilization would be nice, but not essential.
2. If a laser module on the ground fails or wears out, the launch continues..10 or 50% redundancy is entirely feasible.
3. You can do one launch every few minutes, assuming you use LED diode pumped fiber optic lasers, and have sufficient cooling capacity to remove the waste heat and sufficient power generation. That could be a metric ton or so to orbit every 15 minutes, 24/7, 7 days a week.
4. You do 1000 or 10,000 unmanned cargo launches before you send the first man up in a spacecraft identical to the one used for cargo (well, with life support inside, but identical flight hardware). This kind of sampling size allows you to honestly evaluate the safety of the system. In the event of a problem, you turn the beam off instantly and deploy parachutes. (such as beam heating of the side walls or something). No rocket to explode.
5. Each spacecraft will be extremely cheap, just a block of an inert solid bolted to the bottom, and a small instrument package (an iphone has all the circuitry needed, although of course you would use more sensitive accelerometers) and a radio. Obviously, some kind of orbital maneuvering system is also needed, but you can get to orbit without it.

Disadvantages :

1. Reflected beams from the lasers might cause problems for observers on the ground. Might have to create a large exclusion zone around the launch site, with air travel forbidden in a large radius. Not a big deal, tons of places in the Arizona desert. Still, with so many people involved, it seems likely a few people would be blinded if the lasers used were visible light.
2. It would require tens of thousands of dollars of electric power for every launch. Meaning, a ticket to space would still cost tens of thousands of dollars just to launch the capsule + life support for yourself, plus supply capsules. Even though this technology would make it orders of magnitude cheaper than anything we have now, it would still be too expensive for a member of the middle class to routinely go to space.
3. If the laser array fails or has to be shut down RIGHT after lift off, the capsule will be moving too slowly for parachutes to work, and so it would plummet to the ground and kill passengers. One proposal is to use a simple steam catapault to launch the capsule vertically at a high enough velocity that parachutes can be used. Then, if anything goes wrong, you turn off the lasers and deploy chutes.
4. A cost effective system won't launch more than 1000 or so kilograms of payload per launch. You get the volume by doing many launches. This means that astronauts have to be launched one at a time in separate spacecraft that rendevouz in orbit. Large satellites have to be sent as several separate modules. In a few cases, this could pose a problem that cannot be easily solved, for instance spy satellites need a single mirror that may weigh more than 1000 kg alone.

With that said, the cost estimates I have seen say that for a mere 200 billion or so, at current prices, enough lasers could be bought to launch a space-shuttle load every launch.

Anyways, space elevators aren't ever going to be built, if a superior alternative like this is feasible.

(AP) ? Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo arrived in Senegal on Tuesday to try to mediate a solution to the country's political impasse less than a week before a contentious presidential election takes place.

In the hour before his arrival, police fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators as they took to the streets and set fire to tires in a show of anger over the candidacy of the country's 85-year-old leader.

Despite President Abdoulaye Wade's age and the growing unrest, he has continued to say he will run for a third term in Sunday's election even though the constitution was revised to impose a two-term maximum.

Six people have been killed in clashes that have erupted regularly over the past three weeks since the country's highest court ruled that the elderly leader could stand for a third term.

Obasanjo is officially in Senegal as the head of a joint African Union and West African regional bloc election observation mission, but his experience in brokering disputes elsewhere in Africa is likely to play a prominent role.

He told reporters at the airport upon his arrival that although his primary reason for being in the country is to monitor the election, he will not hesitate to step up and take a proactive role in order "to prevent what is preventable."

"This country is a very beautiful country and nothing should be done to destroy it," he added.

A former United Nations envoy, Obasanjo has played a role in mediating conflicts elsewhere on the continent, and last year traveled to Ivory Coast to tell ex-Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo to relinquish power after losing that country's election.

It's a turning of the tables for Wade, who has tried to broker conflicts across the world, even traveling to Benghazi last year to call for the departure of former Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

Senegalese newspapers have been quick to remind readers that Wade himself counseled Obasanjo not to run for a third term.

Obasanjo is remembered for overseeing the first peaceful transfer of power from a military to a civilian government in Nigeria's history, as well as for stepping down in 2007 after two terms.

Asked at the airport to comment on that incident and what message he is bringing Wade now, Obasanjo replied: "If President Wade advised me not to run for a third term ? which I was not running (for) ? maybe he can best advise himself," he said.

Earlier in the day, opposition leaders attempted to lead a demonstration in Place de l'Independance, a square located blocks from the presidential palace and the seat of government.

Among the demonstrators was international pop star Youssou Ndour, who said Wade should be taken at his word. The Senegalese singer recalled that Wade ? who spent 25 years as the leader of the country's opposition before winning the 2000 poll ? had once said that he would leave if the people stood up and told him to go.

Earlier Tuesday, reporters asked Wade's spokesman if Obasanjo was coming to Senegal to ask Wade to refrain from running for a third term.

"Obasanjo is coming as the head of a mission of African Union election observers. If in addition to this observation mission he wants to take the opportunity to talk to people, we're open," said presidential spokesman Serigne Mbacke Ndiaye.

"In the subject of democracy, I think no one is in a position to give us lessons," he added.

"When there is violence, it's regrettable, but less than a year ago, you saw what happened in the suburbs of France where the youths destroyed everything in their path. And yet, France is a great democracy. So there can be a tense situation in a country. There can be unrest, because we're only human."

The street violence that has disrupted daily life in Senegal is highly uncharacteristic for this normally placid nation, long held up as a model of tolerance and stability. Many worry that if Wade is declared the winner of Sunday's ballot, the unrest will spread.

The country's opposition had vowed to render the country ungovernable if Wade insists on running for a third term. The M23 opposition coalition said in a statement hours before Obasanjo's arrival that they are calling on the African Union to apply pressure so that "Wade is obliged to backtrack in order to preserve peace in Senegal."

Dan Chaon: I admit that I'm a junkie for extreme states, and especially troubled psychological states. I have to admit that Psychology Today was one of the first magazines I started reading, back when I was 13 or 14,because I was the kind of kid that was curious about the mysterious human mind -- I hoped to learn about telekenisis, multiple personalities, psychosis, and various other cool and terrible things that happened inside people's heads.

On the one hand, my curiosity was merely titillation -- I wanted to see the extreme edges of the feelings that I was myself experiencing. On the other hand, I've always felt a strong empathy for people who are caught in psychological turmoil.

JH: Which of these stories was the genesis for this collection?

DC: Back in 2003, I was asked to write a story for McSweeney's Mammoth Treasury of Thrilling Tales, edited by Michael Chabon. Chabon's project was to combine so-called literary writing with pulp and genre storytelling elements, and I was very much inspired by what he had to say. I felt like the story I wrote, "The Bees," was a breakthrough for me, and I learned a lot from writers like Karen Joy Fowler, Kelly Link, George Saunders, Kevin Brockmeier -- and many others -- who were doing interesting work with genre-bending. It opened me up to the idea that "literary" didn't necessarily mean "realism." And I started looking at the ghost stories written during the modernist period by people such as Edith Wharton and Elizabeth Bowen and Shirley Jackson. It seemed to me that these stories really spoke to the contemporary condition. I thought: maybe we need the uncanny to find a way to express the way it feels to be alive right now.

JH: Is there a question you are trying to answer for yourself through writing fiction?

DC: Fiction is a particular kind of rhetoric, a way of thinking that I think can be useful in your life. It asks you to image the world through someone else's eyes, and it allows you to try to empathize with situations that you haven't actually experienced. People write fiction in their minds all the time-every time we read a "human interest" news story, or a true crime tale, we find ourselves fascinated because we're trying to understand why people behave the way they do, why they make the choices they do, how we become who we become. Imaginative empathy is one of the great gifts that humans have, and it means that we can live more than one life. We can picture what it would be like from another perspective.

JH: If you couldn't earn a living writing, what would you do?

DC: I love teaching -- it's sometimes hard for me to choose between working on my own stuff and working with students, because my students have so much fresh and exciting energy.

JH: What's the most disturbing and inspiring book you've read during the past year?

DC: I loved the graphic novel Lint by Chris Ware. I think Chris Ware is one of the great geniuses of my generation, and he's doing things with the medium of comics that no one would have imagined possible twenty years ago. It's as if he's creating a new language: his work actually transformed the way that I think about narrative.

JH: What is the one true thing you learned through writing the stories in Stay Awake?

DC: I wanted to play around with the idea of what a "story" meant. I've written melodrama, I've written thrillers, I've written traditional short fiction with epiphanies at the end. I wanted to find a structure that was satisfying to readers and yet broke with the expected in some way.

JH: What's next for you?

DC: I'm in the process of completing a screenplay for my novel Await Your Reply, and working on a new novel.

Dan Chaon is the acclaimed author of Among the Missing, which was a finalist for the National Book Award, and You Remind Me of Me, which was named one of the best books of the year by The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, The Christian Science Monitor, and Entertainment Weekly, among other publications. Chaon's fiction has appeared in many journals and anthologies, including The Best American Short Stories, Pushcart Prize, and The O. Henry Prize Stories. He has been a finalist for the National Magazine Award in Fiction, and he was the recipient of the 2006 Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Chaon lives in Cleveland, Ohio, and teaches at Oberlin College, where he is the Pauline M. Delaney Professor of Creative Writing.

How to Minimize Menopause Bloating With Preventive Measures ...

Menopause bloating is not unusual. The uneasiness you feel in your stomach and or intestines, is due to excess gas, air, wind, flatulence, or any one of these commonly known names. Many people refer to this sensation in the stomach as feeling puffy, bloated, distended, or stuffed. The gas develops from swallowing air or from eating disagreeable foods. The hormonal changes during menopause are considered responsible for increased flatulence and discomfort. There are three (3) ways to minimize menopausal bloating. These include, preventive measures, use of food, and exercise.

Prevention of Menopause Bloating

If you are a menopausal woman who experience excess gas, you should not feel bloated everyday. If this occurs, there might be a need to consult with your doctor to see whether there are other reasons for the unpleasant feelings. In order to help prevent ordinary menopause bloating, it is important to know your body and yourself. For example, know what foods you like and the ones that like you. This might change as you become more mature and experience hormonal changes.

It is not uncommon, for example, for some women to develop excess gas from foods that were previously enjoyed. This occurs sometimes as the body adjusts to unstable hormone levels. The foods frequently include dairy products or seafood. At first, it might be difficult to understand what is causing the bloating. To help solve this problem, try eating only one type of food at each meal. Then, see whether you become bloated after eating this particular food. You can then find other food substitutes that can help you minimize feeling bloated.

Menopause Bloating and Foods

Common foods that result in extra gas and bloating for some menopausal women include: cabbage, eggs, beans, peas, dairy products ? such as milk and cheese. Excess gas might also form in the stomach from eating foods high fats, high sugar foods and drinks, fizzy drinks ? including sodas; and from chewing gum (especially for extended periods of time).

Menopause Bloating Relief

Women might find menopausal bloating relief with the use of various foods and beverages. For example, soy foods can be substituted for dairy products. Hot beverages, teas, soups and broths, are also helpful. Eating small frequent meals will prevent the stomach from being empty for long periods; and will relieve the sensations of feeling stuffed from digesting larger meals.

The stomach and gut have naturally occurring bacteria that aid digestion. These can be destroyed by taking too much of certain medication such as some antibiotics or strong laxatives. Discuss with your doctor before taking any medication (including over-the-counter). Further, some foods can help in replacing or growing good bacteria in the stomach, for example, Yogurt, especially those containing Probiotics. Women have also found relief from stomach gas through exercise.

Menopause Bloating Exercise

Special exercises can be fun while being helpful in relieving puffy feelings. For example, some Yoga poses, crunches, sit-ups, and stretches have been found to move the gas around and out of the body. A 5-10 minute walk, for instance, will help to move the gas around and out of the body. A deep breathing exercise: 5-10 even breaths have a calming effect, relax the body, and aids expulsion of flatulence.

This simple exercise can also help to minimize flatulence or air in stomach or intestines (if you have no personal or medical conditions that this will affect): Lay flat on stomach, face down, across your bed. Bend your knees 4-6 times. This stretches the abdominal muscles and allows the gas to escape (Consult with your doctor before doing this or any exercise).

Although menopause bloating is fairly common, it is not necessary to suffer discomfort. Moreover, you should not feel puffy everyday. Prevention of feeling bloated might not be totally avoidable. However, the feelings can be minimized when you substitute disagreeable foods for those that are less gas forming; and by trying simple exercises that can be both beneficial and fun.

TORONTO (AP) ? Linsane!

Jeremy Lin made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with less than a second to play to cap his finishing flurry of six straight points, and the New York Knicks rallied to beat the Toronto Raptors 90-87 Tuesday night, extending their winning streak to six games.

The NBA's first American-Taiwanese player, Lin had 27 points and a career-high 11 assists in his first game since being named Eastern Conference player of the week.

The season-high crowd of 20,092 roared as Lin drained a pull-up jumper from the top with half a second to play, giving the Knicks their first lead since the opening quarter.

Toronto's Rasual Butler airballed his attempt at the buzzer as the Knicks swarmed their newest hero at center court.

Amare Stoudemire returned from a four-game absence with 21 points and Tyson Chandler had 13 for New York.

Jose Calderon scored 25 points, Linas Kleiza had 15 points and 11 rebounds, and DeMar DeRozan scored 14 for the Raptors.

Up 75-66 to start the fourth, Toronto widened its lead with a three-point play by Barbosa before the Knicks stormed back with a 10-0 run, cutting it to 78-76 and forcing the Raptors to call timeout with 6:22 remaining.

Kleiza stopped the run with a driving layup, Amir Johnson added a hook shot and, after Lin made one of two from the line, Barbosa's layup made it 84-77 with 4:49 to go.

Toronto led 87-82 with less than two minutes to go when Iman Shumpert stole the ball from Calderon and drove in for an uncontested dunk. After a missed shot, Lin completed a three-point play, tying it at 87 with 1:05 left.

Barbosa missed a 3 for Toronto and, at the other end, Shumpert missed a jumper but Chandler grabbed the rebound. Lin took the ball near midcourt and let the clock run down to 5 seconds before driving and pulling up against Calderon to launch the decisive shot, touching off the latest instance of Linsanity.

The Raptors had a photo of Lin on their team website in the hours before the game, and his visit generated major interest among Toronto's Asian community, estimated at over 280,000 people, or more than 11 percent of the local population. The Chinese Canadian Youth Athletics Association and the Taiwanese Canadian Association of Toronto both sent groups of almost 300 fans as Toronto sold out for the second time in 13 home games. One group of fans in the upper deck wore white T-shirts spelling out his name.

Not all the fans were so positive: Lin was booed several times throughout the game.

Local media also took note; some 75 reporters and 16 cameras packed a Tuesday morning press conference to hear Lin speak, with dozens more turned away to prevent overcrowding. More than 25 Chinese Canadian journalists were due to cover the game, including one who presented Lin with a book of "Year of the Dragon" stamps from Canada Post and asked him to record a message in Mandarin, which he did.

Even Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni was shocked by the size of the throng upon walking in for his turn at the microphone.

"Are we in the playoffs now?" D'Antoni joked as he made his way to the front of the room.

It was Calderon, coming off a career-high 30 points in Sunday's loss to the Lakers, who was hot early, scoring 12 points in the first as the Raptors led 28-21 after one. Lin missed his first shot and didn't score until a driving layup with 3:46 left in the first. He had four points and four assists in the opening quarter.

Lin turned the ball over on three straight possessions early in the second and Toronto took advantage with a 6-0 run, widening its lead to 13 points. He also missed a running bank shot as the half ended as the Raptors took a 47-36 lead into the break.

Stoudemire scored seven points and Lin had six points and four assists as the Knicks scored 30 points in the third, but still trailed 75-66 heading into the fourth.

NOTES: Lin matched a career high with eight turnovers. ... Stoudemire returned after missing the past four games the death of his older brother, Hazell, who was killed in a car crash. ... Raptors G Jerryd Bayless (left ankle) missed his third straight game. Coach Dwane Casey said Bayless could be available for Wednesday's game against San Antonio. ... Before the game, Chandler presented Casey with his NBA championship ring. Both were with Dallas last season when they beat Miami. ... Musician and actor Steven Van Zandt watched from a courtside seat.

Android an obvious benefactor of Google-Motorola deal (Appolicious)

Image from pocketnow.comThe jig is up. As the $12.5 billion Google-Motorola deal gained approval from the U.S. just hours after the European Union granted clearance, it?s becoming harder to believe the acquisition will have little impact on Android. Google insists the Motorola Mobility buy was a patent acquisition to defend Android from the recent smattering of lawsuits from Apple and others. But this is really a win for Google, its Android OS and Motorola. From a device and software standpoint, it?s high time Google admits the need for an independent hardware channel. After all, this could work.

While Google?s acquisition still awaits approval from China, Taiwan and Israel, pundits are already exploring a world of Google-Motorola harmony. Google needs more control over the device-making process to stay on par with rivals, and that means more gadgets to pre-install Android software. The timely leak of Motorola?s first Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich handset has reinforced a vision of these two falling into step, aided by the murmurings of Android@home, a system of connected devices.

Motorola joins the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich party

Motorola?s first Android 4.0 is reported to be powered by Intel?s Medfield platform, a switch-up from the typical TI OMAP processors in most of its smartphones. With photos hitting the web we can see a likely perk with the phone?s camera, which is expected to come with instant-on burst mode. Also look for a new version of MotoBlur, all to debut at Mobile World Congress in a couple of weeks.

James Kendrick of ZDNet proposes a Motorola Nexus line, urging Google to rethink its separate operations strategy. With Android having reached a certain saturation point, it?s become a messy match-up for OEMs. Samsung?s the big winner at the moment, making a difficult time for Motorola, HTC and Sony.

While Motorola is protected under Google?s wing, HTC and Sony have turned to each other for solace. Word of a PlayStation-certified HTC device is bubbling up around MWC, boosting HTC?s faltering device line and expanding Sony?s software reach. PlayStation has been a mobile safety net for Sony this past year, and as Microsoft turns an eye to Android for Xbox LIVE, Sony will have to leverage a diversified distribution strategy as well.

Atlantic Canada Port Guide | Leisure Group Travel: Group Trip ...

Lobsters and lighthouses? cavorting whales and colonies of seabirds? forests, farmlands, and fishing villages. A maritime kingdom all its own, the Atlantic Coast of Canada seems inaccessible from the rest of the world, yet it?s a tailor-made cruise destination within easy reach of New York or Boston.

Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada?s Maritimes welcome cruise ships on their way to and from New England ports and St. Lawrence River cities like Quebec City and Montreal. The southern Maritime Provinces?New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island?are clustered together, while the large, ruggedly individualistic island of Newfoundland sits by itself to the northeast.

Canada?s eastern coast was first settled by Europeans in search of fertile cod fishing grounds, with the English, Scottish, Irish, and French the most dominant groups. French-speaking residents can be found in pockets of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, and to a lesser extent, Nova Scotia, but the Scots had the most influence on the region?s culture, noted for its strong Celtic flavor.

In search of adventure in a foreign country that?s not too foreign, more than a half million Americans on some 15 lines cruise the waters of Atlantic Canada between May and October. Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Saint John, New Brunswick, garner the lion?s share of port calls. Their newest visitor will be the Disney Magic, which begins a series of nine, five-day trips from New York this June.

Carnival Cruise Lines and Holland America Line both offer a full slate of summer Canada-New England cruises as well as fall foliage departures in September and October. Lines with fall sailings include Celebrity Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Cunard Line, Oceania Cruises, Princess Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Seabourn Cruise Line and Silversea Cruises.

Saint John, New Brunswick

Serving as the gateway to Canada?s Maritimes, Saint John is only 70 miles from the Maine-New Brunswick border and seriously courts cruise ship business. Arriving ladies are given a rose in the cruise terminal, while gentlemen receive a lapel pin. Awaiting in the parking lot are Gray Line?s double-decker ?Big Pink? buses that offer guided hop-on, hop-off service throughout the day (also available in Halifax). A portion of proceeds is donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Happily for those who like to explore on their own, the city?s top attractions are just blocks from the berths.

A metro area of 130,000 on the Bay of Fundy, Saint John expects about 200,000 cruise guests this year and predicts some 240,000 by 2015, thanks to a berth expansion project that will accommodate ships carrying more than 5,000 passengers. The 2,974-passenger Carnival Glory makes the most calls.

Saint John began to flourish after British Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution settled there in 1783, becoming Canada?s first incorporated city two years later. Tour guides dress as Loyalists (Tories), and an Anglo feel pervades the Trinity Royal preservation area of Victorian buildings centered around Prince William Street, an easy walk from the dock.

Most tours of Saint John include the New Brunswick Museum, which tells the story of lumbering, shipbuilding, fishing and other industries that shaped the province. At the block-long Saint John City Market, Canada?s oldest farmers market (dating from 1876), you can shop for blueberry and maple products, have a salmon sandwich and sample dulse, a leafy sea vegetable dried in the sun and eaten as a snack food by locals. From Fallsview Park, tour passengers can witness Reversing Falls, a phenomenon in which Bay of Fundy tides (the highest tides in the world) battle the St. John River twice a day and force it to flow backwards in a series of whirlpools and rapids.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

For cruise visitors, the best part of Halifax is its tourist-friendly boardwalk, a harborfront promenade that invites leisurely strolls past shops, kiosks, and marinas thronged by seagulls. Halifax (metro pop. 400,000) is Atlantic Canada?s largest urban area but doesn?t feel big. Most of it can be seen on foot.

Pier 21, a museum right next to the cruise terminal, is Canada?s version of Ellis Island and preserves the hall where thousands of immigrants first set foot on Canadian soil. A movie, video interviews and push-button displays tell their stories.

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, a 10-minute walk from cruise docks, spotlights Halifax?s role as the center of rescue and recovery operations following the 1912 sinking of the Titanic. A film, plus relics like a deck chair and piece of the grand staircase, recall the tragedy, which gets extra attention this year, its 100th anniversary.

Many city tours make a stop at Fairview Cemetery, the final resting place of 121 Titanic victims. Another staple is the hilltop Halifax Citadel, a 19th century British naval fort. Visitors can roam the ramparts for panoramic views and witness the sentry-changing ceremony featuring 78th Highlander re-enactors resplendent in kilts and bearskin hats.

A city tour is often combined with Peggy?s Cove, a picture-perfect fishing village with a storybook lighthouse. For those seeking outdoor adventure, the Carnival Glory offers a tall ship sailing experience, a lobster boat trip and sea kayaking followed by a lunch of lobster rolls and mussels.

Sydney, Nova Scotia

Sydney (pop. 30,000), known for its steel and coal mining heritage, serves as the gateway to Cape Breton Island, the Celtic heart of Nova Scotia. Settled by Scots in the early 1800s, the Cape Breton Highlands, with rocky inlets and mountains that plunge to the sea, rivals the rugged splendor of the Scottish Highlands. Excursions from Sydney include a drive along the scenic Cabot Trail, which follows the coastline and loops through Cape Breton Highlands National Park, an especially awesome drive in autumn.

Greeting passengers at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion is the World?s Largest Fiddle, a 60-foot sculpture of a Scottish-style fiddle. The pavilion?s Lighthouse Theatre shows a video of its construction, and the Big Fiddle Market sells tartan products, hand-knitted creations and Celtic music CDs.

From Sydney, a popular shore excursion travels 22 miles to Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, a recreated settlement that portrays French colonial days. Built in the 1960s, the stone-walled village is North America?s largest historical reconstruction. Journeying back to 1744, guests meet soldiers, sailors, and servants, encountering barnyard animals, musket fire, bread baking and other slices of life in this former outpost of France.

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

Charlottetown, a city of 33,000, is the capital of P.E.I. and accounts for a quarter of its population. A patchwork of green pastures and potato fields, quaint villages and fishing ports, red earth and white beaches, the bucolic island (121 miles long by 38 miles wide) is by far the smallest province in Canada.

Last year Charlottetown drew ships from 13 lines, with Holland America?s Maasdam the most frequent caller in this town of Victorian buildings and tree-shaded squares.

Fiddlers and step dancers greet cruise passengers, and there?s a portside photo op with Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Along the boardwalks of Charlottetown?s waterfront, you can shop for souvenirs, listen to buskers and enjoy fresh seafood (mussels are a specialty).

Maasdam passengers get their lobster fix on several shore excursions, including ?Cinderella Carriage Ride & Lobster Lunch.? Those who opt for the ?Lobster Fishing Excursion? join a crew headed for the lobster pots set in Northumberland Strait. Other P.E.I. shore tours visit Anne of Green Gables homestead, the setting that inspired Lucy Maud Montgomery?s novels about the misadventures of a red-headed orphan girl.

St. John?s, Newfoundland

Dating back to the 1620s, St. John?s is North America?s oldest English-settled city?and its most easterly. Here in Canada?s ?Far East,? the day?s first rays of sunlight bathe the continent at Cape Spear, a national historic site with Newfoundland?s oldest lighthouse, circa 1832.

The lively arts scene and cosmopolitan outlook of this metro area of 180,000 contrast with the rest of Newfoundland, a remote island that is overwhelmingly rural and conservative. St. John?s is the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, two distinct landmasses administered as one province and much larger than the other Maritimes.

The city?s chief attraction is a museum complex called The Rooms, a cultural oasis with works of Canadian artists and exhibits on Newfoundland?s natural and cultural history, from moose and polar bears to native crafts and Irish fishing heritage.

Signal Hill offers great harbor views and is crowned by Cabot Tower, a castle built in 1897 for Queen Victoria?s Diamond Jubilee and the 400th anniversary of English explorer John Cabot?s arrival in the New World. It was on Signal Hill that Guglielmo Marconi ushered in the era of wireless communications, receiving the first transatlantic signal in 1901. Exhibits at two places chronicle Cabot?s and Marconi?s accomplishments.

Corner Brook, Newfoundland

Located among the Long Range Mountains on the Humber River, Newfoundland?s second largest city (pop. 27,000) is the hub of the island?s west coast. The 22-mile sail into Corner Brook, nestled at the end of a fjord in the sheltered Bay of Islands, enthralls cruise passengers, especially when the mountains are ablaze with fall colors. Corner Brook has been a cruise stop for more than 30 years, thanks to its proximity to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, a springboard to ports along the St. Lawrence River.

City tours visit the Captain James Cook Monument, perched atop Crow?s Hill. Before British explorer James Cook ventured to the South Pacific, he charted the Newfoundland coastline in the 1760s. A tour along Captain Cook?s Trail visits scenic points of interest, including the charming fishing village of Lark Harbour.

Full-day excursions from Corner Brook visit Gros Morne National Park, a geological wonder and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its most prominent feature is the bleak, barren Tablelands, an eerie, rust-colored moonscape.
