Andretti leads IndyCar young guns vying for pole

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Maybe Marco Andretti can make good on his vision of going from last to first at Indianapolis.

The 25-year-old American with the well-known surname and the long racing legacy put himself atop the list of Pole Day favorites by becoming the only driver in Indianapolis 500 practice this week to post a lap over 227 mph.

Before that, he was the first driver to go faster than 226. Now, one year after making the Indy 500 on the last qualifying run of the weekend, he could become the first Andretti to win Indy's coveted pole in a quarter century.

"I showed up this month to win the race, and I still believe we could do it from 33rd," Andretti said after Friday's practice. "If we could do it from first that would be fantastic. They told me it (an Andretti on the pole) hasn't happened since my grandfather did it in 1987 and that was the year I was born, so it would be cool to be able to be on the pole tomorrow."

Andretti's incredible move up the speed charts this week comes in the midst of what has been an extremely trying season.

He hasn't qualified better than 10th in the last three races, hasn't finished in the top 10 yet and has replaced his most recent radio caller, father and team owner, Michael Andretti, with Kyle Moyer.

Race organizers couldn't have scripted a better story line for Pole Day.

Last May was easily the worst of Andretti's six career starts at Indianapolis, and without a wave off from James Jakes, he may have missed the race. The Andretti Autosport cars struggled all month with speed and two of the five cars failed to qualify for the race. Andretti only made it because of a courageous last-minute run that bumped teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay out of the field. Andretti wound up starting 27th.

This year Andretti is leading a pack of 20-something Americans who have been at or near the top of the speed charts most of this week, setting up a Pole Day classic of young guns vs. the old guard.

"They've been impressive for sure and certainly guys to keep an eye on looking forward," said Team Penske driver Ryan Briscoe, who was No. 2 Friday at 226.835. "But there are a lot of drivers here with a lot of experience and a lot of teams. You're talking about Andretti being a five-car team, (Target Chip) Ganassi a four-car team and Penske being a three-car team, I think that's what 12 cars? So some of them will be out of the top nine tomorrrow."

Three-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves was third fastest Friday at 226.716. Ten other drivers surpassed 225 including three-time defending IndyCar champ Dario Franchitti, two-time IndyCar champ Scott Dixon and last year's 500 runner-up JR Hildebrand -- the 24-year-old American.

The top 24 spots are expected to be filled Saturday. Drivers with the nine-fastest four-lap qualifying averages will advance to a 90-minute shootout late in the afternoon. The winner claims the biggest pole of the IndyCar season.

It's as wide open as it has been in years, and nobody seems to know where they fit in.

American rookies Josef Newgarden, 21, and Bryan Clauson, 22, had been among the fastest cars all week, mostly with tows. Newgarden topped the speed charts three times this week, while Clauson was third in practice last Saturday and second Sunday.

On Friday, with the added power boost of roughly 4 mph, Newgarden slid to 13th at 225.021, while Clauson was 23rd at 224.224. Yet if they can figure out where they lost speed Friday, they could be surprise contenders.

"We struggled a little bit to find a good balance, but we kind of got it back there at the end," Clauson said. "We'll work on it overnight to improve our qualifying position for tomorrow."

Who else could make a run at the pole?

Castroneves, Dixon, Franchitti and the other two Penske drivers ? Briscoe and points leader Will Power ? have all started on Indy's front row.

Fan favorite and 2005 Indy pole winner Tony Canaan drew the favored No. 1 spot in qualifying line after going 10th fastest Friday (225.322).

Canadian James Hinchcliffe and American Ryan Hunter-Reay, teammates with Andretti, have been strong this week, too. Both posted laps in the top six.

But with the new cars, the lack of solo laps and the possibility of sandbagging, nobody really knows.

"You never know if everybody is showing their full hand until it really counts and everything is on the table," Hinchcliffe said. "If you look at some of the runs other guys are having compared to us (Andretti Autosport) ? it's really not just one of us, it's all of us I think ? it puts the team in a really good position for tomorrow."

What is clear is that Chevrolet still has an edge over Honda.

The four fastest drivers Friday and eight of the top 10 all used Chevys. Dixon (fifth, 226.224) and Franchitti (ninth, 225.370) were the only Honda cars to crack the top 10.

Not surprisingly, the Penske and Andretti cars each use Chevys and the fastest of that group is the newest Andretti vying for the pole.

"Why not try to go for the pole?" Marco Andretti said. "We woke the car up, and with this added boost today, we woke my car up today, too. We found a couple of tenths of a mph and that's what it's going to come down too."

We're overspending, and we may be in denial about it

By Allison Linn

It?s no secret that many Americans have long relied on credit cards and other forms of debt to get what we want, or what we need.

But a new survey finds that even in the wake of the Great Recession, we may not be?totally honest with ourselves about whether we are living beyond our means.

The survey of about 3,000 Americans finds that about half of the respondents spend more than they earn at least a few months out of the year.

Yet only about 1 in 10 respondents said their current lifestyle is more than they can afford. The vast majority said their lifestyle is about what they can afford.

The survey was conducted by Rasmussen Reports on behalf of Country Financial as part of the company?s monthly measure of?financial security.

Of the people who spend more than they earn at least some of the time, about 36 percent said the primary response is to dip into savings to meet their financial obligations. About 22 percent said they use credit cards to cover the gap, while 12 percent delayed paying the bills.

The good news is that half the people surveyed ? 46 percent ? rarely or never spend more than they earn in a given month.

The difficult economy has had a devastating impact on many Americans' finances, and that has forced some to rely more on credit cards and other forms of borrowing because they don?t have the money to meet monthly expenses.

For many the recession and recovery served as a wake-up call to pare back on credit card debt and get their finances under control.

Recently, however, there have been signs that people are feeling more comfortable again about taking on debt. The Federal Reserve said last week that Americans increased borrowing in March?for things like cars and education, and also used their credit cards more.

Americans also may be living beyond their means because they have less money than they used to. The nation?s median household income has fallen by about 7 percent from its peak in 1999 after adjusting for inflation.

Article Marketing Blogs ? Starting an Internet Marketing Business ...

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012 at 12:19 pm ?

One of the most common and free methods to starting an internet marketing business are article marketing blogs. If you are really passionate about the prospect of starting an online business from scratch, and turning nothing into something, you will find a link at the bottom of this article to help you get started. It requires little to no money to start, and if you find a good niche market, it is not unreasonable for a determined individual to make a 5-figure monthly income.

First understand that this is a real business that requires hard work. It is unrealistic to expect that you will be the next internet marketing guru on your first campaign, but with the right tools, guidance, and most important of all, the determination to TAKE ACTION daily and never give up, you will succeed! This is the pattern of success in anything you do in life. Set your goals and take action daily.

There are literally thousands of companies looking for ways to increase their work force and promote their products, a huge selection of the digital variety. One way they are accomplishing this is through affiliate marketing. The beauty of affiliate marketing as opposed to a more traditional store-front business is that you can promote an infinite number of products without ever owning or warehousing them ? no overhead.

Once you have found a product or products to promote, the next step is building your online store-front. Like I mentioned earlier, one of the common methods is article marketing blogs. Let?s say you use an acne product that you just love and find an affiliate program for it. You would write an article explaining how the product helped you, and how it can help your potential customer with their acne problem.

If done correctly, they would click on a link to your blog where they would find additional information and finally click through to the product sales page. If a sale is made you get a commission. Simple, right? Well there?s more to it than that, but you get the gist.

Your goal and real challenge with article marketing blogs is in driving traffic to your blog or website. More and more people are turning to the internet to spend their dollars. You need to capture these potential customers and drive them to your blog or website. Article marketing is a proven method for accomplishing this and is used by many of the top internet marketers today.

As mentioned earlier, article marketing blogs have the potential of generating a considerably large passive income every month, but simply setting up a blog or website is not enough. There are numerous other factors like search engine optimization, link building and social bookmarking just to name a few.

I have only scratched the surface on how to make a profit with article marketing blogs. The techniques and tools needed to truly succeed and grow your online business cannot be enumerated in this article alone though.

I run a website that helps people just like you get started in internet marketing. Please visit InternetMarketingforNewbs.com to find information on starting an online business from scratch. You will find resources to all the tools, training, support, and services needed to help you succeed.

Safer kidney cancer surgery under-used for poorer, sicker Medicare, Medicaid patients

Safer kidney cancer surgery under-used for poorer, sicker Medicare, Medicaid patients [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 15-May-2012

DETROIT An increasingly common and safer type of surgery for kidney cancer is not as likely to be used for older, sicker and poorer patients who are uninsured or rely on Medicare or Medicaid for their health care, according to a new study by researchers at Henry Ford Hospital.

The treatment, partial nephrectomy (PN), involves surgically removing only the diseased portion of a cancerous kidney, leaving the unaffected part to continue to function.

Standard treatment for small kidney tumors has traditionally been radical nephrectomy (RN) surgical removal of the entire kidney, part of the ureter, the adrenal gland, and some surrounding tissue.

The less-extreme PN became possible with improvements in 3D scanning technology, and not only offers obvious advantages over RN, but earlier studies have found that it results in an overall drop in related cardiovascular complications and death.

The results will be presented this week at the American Urological Association Annual Meeting in Atlanta.

The Henry Ford study looked at 375,986 kidney cancer patients from throughout the U.S. who underwent either PN or RN from 1998 to 2009. Of those, 63,670 were PN patients.

During the study period, researchers found that the rate PR grew nearly five times, from 6 percent of patients to 28 percent, says Quoc-Dien Trinh, M.D., a Fellow at Henry Ford Hospital's Vattikuti Urology Institute and lead author of the study.

Most kidney cancer patients today can be treated with this kidney-saving technique, which reduces the chance of long-term kidney failure. Another advantage is that if something happens to the patient's other kidney, there is still one in reserve.

But the Henry Ford study also found that while PN is becoming more common, it is not being used to treat certain patients for other than medical reasons. The researchers learned that rates of PN dropped in patients who:

  • Are older and have additional diseases or disorders
  • Have no insurance or rely and Medicare and/or Medicaid for their health care
  • Live in lower-income zip codes
  • Are treated in lower-volume, non-teaching hospitals

There are several possible reasons for these disparities, Dr. Trinh says, although they're mostly conjecture because available data doesn't provide the information to test them.

"We couldn't adjust for such things as disease characteristics like tumor size, grade or location," he explains. "Also, it's possible that these patients have inferior access to care, so present with worse disease, when partial nephrectomy isn't feasible.

"However, it is also entirely possible that patients within this bracket are treated at hospitals that don't have the proficiency to perform this advanced surgical technique, therefore putting these patients at risk of the well-documented, long-term effects of radical nephrectomy."

If the disparities exist because of limited access, "then mechanisms need to be implemented to ensure that these patients receive higher quality care, and that they receive the appropriate treatment, namely partial nephrectomy, whenever possible," Dr. Trinh says. "This has been shown in all sorts of medical procedures and specialties.

"We have to change the way insurance is distributed and how health care is delivered. But this is easier said than done."

Apple Said To Debut iCloud?s New Photo Sharing Features At WWDC

icloud_heroWith Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference just weeks away, expect plenty of reports of new features to come crawling out of the woodwork. In fact, here's one from the Wall Street Journal -- they claim that Apple has been doing some major tinkering with their iCloud storage service, the fruits of which will be unveiled on June 11. First up is the ability for users to share and comment on each other's photos, a pretty dramatic shift away from iCloud's current approach to photo storage. As it stands, each user has a single Photo Stream meant mostly to make sure images are on the devices they need to be on. This shift in sharing actually sounds a little reminiscent of Apple's recently-killed MobileMe service, though how exactly the sharing process would play out within iCloud is still up in the air.

Want To Know What Apple Will Do Next In Mobile Commerce? Check Out The Pirq It?s Giving To Employees

Pirq screenshotAs device makers like RIM, Samsung and Nokia incorporate NFC technology into their mobile devices, Apple has been radio silent on what its plans will be in mobile commerce and payments. But a deal that is getting announced today could be a clue to one area where Apple might see a big opportunity. Apple has signed on with Pirq, a startup from Seattle, to offer food and drink daily deals to its employees in the Bay Area, with the service working by way of an iPhone app, location-based technology, and a Microsoft Tag code to redeem the discounts. A source tells TechCrunch that this is the first part of a potential "four phase" implementation that could see Apple offering a deals service out to all iPhone users.
