(AP) ? Did Minnie Mouse do a catwalk cleanse?

For a brief moment in Barneys New York's upcoming holiday window display, Minnie becomes a long, lean high-fashion model ? and the skinny Minnie is drawing some criticism.

The Barneys display puts Disney characters on the runway in front of animated versions of industry bigwigs in a short film that features Minnie's daydream sequence strutting her stuff in Paris in a hot-pink, ruffle-covered Lanvin dress.

Runway Minnie gets only a few seconds of face time, but when she does, she transforms into a model who is tall and thin with longer legs, leaner arms and daintier gloved hands than the polkadot-loving character who typically embraces her curves from head to toe. Daisy Duck, Cruella De Vil and Goofy get similar insta-slim treatments.

For most of the film, however, Minnie and crew look their usual selves. Minnie has her big bows, round face and signature wide-width pumps.

"Viewers will recognize the Minnie they know and love, as she takes a turn on the runways of Paris and in her own mirror, wearing a custom creation from one of the world's greatest designers," Barneys said in a statement to The Associated Press. "Some of the early highly stylized fashion illustrations have garnered significant attention, however the reality is Disney's Minnie Mouse proves that true fashion lovers come in all styles and sizes."

Still, the makeover has prompted several online petitions targeting Barneys and Disney for perpetuating the skinny-model image that the fashion industry has been criticized for many times over.

One of the louder voices is Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman, executive director and founder of SumofUs.org, a consumer watchdog group. In just over a week, the SumofUs.org petition has attracted close to 80,000 online "signatures." There are a half-dozen additional petitions up on Change.org, including one with more than 135,000 supporters. It was launched by Ragen Chastain, who self-published the book "Fat: The Owners Manual ? Navigating a Thin-Obsessed World with Your Health, Happiness and a Sense of Humor Intact."

Stinebrickner-Kauffman said she took this issue on after a friend of hers ? a mother to a grade-school daughter ? posted about it on Facebook. "Girls have seen Minnie Mouse as a healthy character in their lives ... to have her image subverted like that is troubling."

Girls are "bombarded" by impossible physical figures in the media, says Stinebrickner-Kauffmann, and to have such a familiar face ? and shape ? be turned into such a skinny Minnie seems like it could fuel the insecurities young women often have about themselves and their bodies.

Models are indeed taller and thinner than most women, and those features are further exaggerated in fashion illustrations used by designers ? and by Barneys in its promotional material for the Nov. 14 launch of its displays, says Steven Stipelman, assistant chair of fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Those are the images that are being protested, as the film short has not been released beyond the trailer provided to The Associated Press. The film does not feature the drawing that has been the focus of criticism, though Minnie does undergo a transformation as soon as she steps onto the catwalk in front of Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz, International Herald Tribune reporter Suzy Menkes and Harper's Bazaar global fashion director Carine Roitfeld, among other recognizable faces. Runway Minnie even masters the straight-ahead stare and bouncy strut that real-life models aim to master.

She then comes quickly back to reality and her everyday appearance, and the film ends with her just as happy as herself window-shopping on Madison Avenue as she was in Paris.

"Fashion drawing is a fantasy," said Stipelman, who teaches illustration. "They are conveying a mood, a feeling and attitude. It's supposed to make you feel like you want the attitude of this person, not like you're going on a diet so you can look like this person."

He adds, "It looks exaggerated because you know what you're comparing it to. If you didn't know what Minnie looked like, you probably wouldn't even notice."

Stop Building Bombs and Start Building Starships

In 1969, a great shadow was cast over the United States. That shadow, however, was not one of gloom. Instead of evoking the absence of light, this shadow caused us to look up in wonder at the brightness that created it. When the Saturn V Rocket propelling Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins dashed across the blue, cloud-splotched sky, we did not see a dark present. We glimpsed a bright future.

Elsewhere, however, truly ominous shadows were cast by rockets which never saw the sun. Nestled in silos and buried beneath barren landscapes, ?Minuteman? missiles meant not to uplift man, but to deliver the end of man, shrouded much of our world in trepidation.

These two rockets, with two very distinct purposes, bring into focus a problem that has long plagued our nation. We spend far too much money on war, and not enough on science.

Considering that we are nearing the ominously titled ?fiscal cliff? ? a series of government spending cuts and tax increases that will automatically take effect if Congress and the President do not act to stop it ? we have a unique opportunity to review Federal spending and ensure that we are investing our time and wealth to their most productive ends.

I argue that such a review ? if guided by reason ? would reveal that defense spending should be reduced in order to make way for a world-changing commitment to science and technology, a bold move that will put both the United States and the world on a path to a bright future.

As it stands today, the United States is clearly over militarized. Defense spending in 2011 was estimated at $711 Billion. That?s equal to the combined budgets of the next fourteen top-spending countries, over half of whom are strong U.S. allies. Moreover, a 2011 Government Accountability Office audit of defense spending found that a combined $70 billion was wasted in 2010 and 2009.

This over-the-top spending is indicative of a military-industrial-complex run amok, precisely the scenario that President Dwight D. Eisenhower, perhaps the most revered military commander of the 20th century, warned against in his farewell address. ?Together, we must learn how to compose differences not with arms, but with intellect and decent purpose,? he avowed.

I can think of no better way to fulfill Eisenhower?s vision than through the pursuit of science.

By intelligently, purposefully, and gradually drawing down the defense budget from 4.7% to 3.0% of GDP (from $709 to $453 billion), and diverting some of those funds to meaningful science projects of both national and global significance, the United States can accomplish the essential goal of protecting its citizens, while simultaneously making the world a safer, healthier place and reinvigorating our economy.

We can begin the funding transition at home by re-committing ourselves to NASA. If we double the space agency?s budget (currently at $17.8 billion), our space accomplishments in ten years will dwarf even the monumental success of this summer, when the Curiosity rover landed on Mars.

We can complete the James Webb Space Telescope, allowing us to peer farther into the Universe than ever before. We can go to Mars by the end of the decade, a mission which astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson insists ?would reboot America?s capacity to innovate as no other force in society can.? And with the recent news that warp drive may be more feasible than originally thought, we can focus on researching and eventually engineering interstellar starships that could one day take humans to Gliese 581 g ? a potentially habitable Earth-like planet ? in a mere two years. Along the way we could solve a myriad of other problems, writes Space.com?s Clara Moskowitz:

??if human beings can solve the challenges of interstellar spaceflight, in the process they will have solved many of the problems plaguing Earth today, experts said. For example, building a starship will require figuring out how to conserve and recycle resources, how to structure societies for the common well-being, and how to harness and use energy sustainably.?

Internet Marketing's Best Tips For Today | Internet Marketing ...

Different businesses will grow to different sizes. Some will be super powers and some will stay small. Most, however, will just up and disappear. Businesses overall have a high rate of failure, and online businesses are particularly susceptible to failure. Read this article to learn how to avoid that fate by implementing some great Internet marketing training tips.

Attract visitors to your site by offering up a valuable and relevant feature or service. Draw (or have drawn) unique illustrations for your website. Offer a good e-book that provides your potential customers with valuable information. The more original you are, the more exclusive your business appears to be. It?s this type of originality that will keep people coming back time and again to your site.

Integrate links into your site which contain valuable keywords. By giving visitors other links to previous posts, you can drive more traffic to your website. The proper use of internal links will keep customers on your pages and have search engines offering your site to other people making web queries.

TIP! How well your website works is no less important than the experience customers have when they visit your store in person. Testing your links, images, ads and checkout process for errors can avoid upsetting visitors.

Section off the website and have a central page which can link you customers to all of your product offerings. Be sure to offer plenty of ways for people to check out your products, while still properly organizing your site.

It is important to include mobile marketing in your business plan. A great option is to offer texts when there are specials from your site for people to see. This is the latest in digital advertising, and it will be a boon to any Website marketing campaign.

Although you may not know it at first, you are well-equipped to create a successful online marketing strategy. You do not have to purchase high-end software or get-rich-quick programs. All that?s needed are your innate talents. Be diligent, and think thoroughly about the marketing decisions that you make.

TIP! Terminology suggestive of instant results is something that is likely to boost the marketing results of virtually anything you may be offering. Your advertisement should emphasize how quickly orders get processed, how fast orders will be shipped and delivered, and the speed at which buyers will obtain results from their purchase.

A great way to land new customers is by having a ?Dollar Sale? for first time customers. You will receive extra visitors, and get your product name more widely exposed. This can also help you sell other products because most people will come for the bargain and add other products as well. Be sure of yourself and your business.

Should your visitor ultimately choose not to purchase your product, have a questionnaire at the end of your form so that they may advise you as to why they did not make the purchase. Their specific reasons will be a great help to you in improving your site.

As part of your strategy in website marketing, think about developing a page on your website that is geared toward public relations. You can include content with articles that could be used for magazines, newspapers and online. This method is a very easy and effective one for promoting your business to the masses.

TIP! Highlight the specialness of the product by including ?limited? in ads. Individuals purchase online as they are exhausted by the merchandise their area stores are offering.

Regular blogging can have a large impact on marketing. Consistent blogging provides yet another way to keep your customers informed. Blogs also give your website a lot of extra content, which appeals to search engines and will improve your rankings.

Create a 500 error page that is user-friendly. This happens when a code stops working for you. If you use a generic page, all people will know is that the connection timed out. There are much better methods for making users aware that you are working on the problem.

If you want people to affiliate themsevles with you, make a button they can put on their site that is very appealing. An advertising badge or a linking badge lets people know that it?s fairly easy to work with you or to link with you. This is something that?s mutually beneficial for you and anyone else out there with a website.

TIP! Conducting business online can often seem very impersonal. This is an important strategy for smaller, independent businesses who want to create personal relationships with customers for retention purposes.

Try using words like ?simple? and ?easy? in your Internet campaign. People tend to dislike products that seem fussy or complicated, so describing them with phrases, such as ?easy to order? or ?simple assembly? makes customers more likely to try them out. That is a simple way to boost business.

High quality graphics are an important component in any marketing campaign. Having clear images will help your customers decide whether or not to purchase your products. Consider adding an option which allows customers to upload pictures of your products. If your product warrants use of ?before and after? pictures, they can be an effective selling tool.

There are many free marketing resources for people who cannot afford consultants. You could also join online communities, read blogs, go to seminars, or read eBooks.

TIP! Try to be as comprehensive and content-oriented as possible when creating your website. You need to educate your customers as quickly as possible, so they will know what to buy.

Write articles about your business and send them to magazines for publishing. You can use your writing skills to promote your business or website by creating great copy and distributing it generally across the Internet, or to a more targeted audience, if preferred. Getting your articles published is easier if you cultivate relationships with editors; you can do this by giving out free samples or making affiliate arrangements.

When others fail at their online business, it allows you the opportunity to take their place and succeed where they could not. Develop your marketing with some of the suggestions above, and you will be ready to take the next steps in your company?s online

96% The Imposter

All Critics (92) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (88) | Rotten (4)

The most fascinating aspect of the movie is why the missing boy's family believed the imposter's story.

You may begin to wonder if you aren't being conned by the movie yourself.

Beverly Dollarhide, Nicholas's mother, says of the period after her son's disappearance, "My main goal in life at that time was not to think." Apparently, the filmmakers have taken a cue from her.

Layton's dazzling film is an exciting, edge-of-your-seat experience superior to any Hollywood mystery you're likely to see for a long time.

"The Imposter" becomes more than just a missing-persons drama. It hints at something much darker: a real-life horror story, the full truth of which may never be known.

This is one creepy mystery.

If only the movie didn't almost glamorise Bourdin's action, they'd have been onto a real masterpiece.

If you are a fan of true crime stories or the workings of the human mind, The Imposter will blow you away.

... both interesting and repellent.

An unnerving experience and a brilliant piece of documentary filmmaking that peels back the layers on one of the most perplexing stories

Layton layers "The Imposter" with powerful images in the dramatic re-creations, as well as a brooding soundscape and a concise pacing that distributes its information with the reserve of a good mystery writer.

"The Imposter" may be the first movie since "Penn and Teller Get Killed" whose title may need its own spoiler alert.

Every bit as engaging as it is well-shot, it proves once more that truth is, indeed, stranger than fiction.

A mixture of documentary, mystery and thriller, which recounts an astonishing true story that gets more outrageous with each revelation

Strange and intriguing, searching for that elusive essence known as 'the perfect truth.'

Rather like watching a magician pulling off a trick which your eyes cannot see, The Imposter offers its own strange kind of magic.

The story is astonishing enough on its own, and The Imposter succeeds in enhancing its immediacy and intensity.

As his story unfolds, one gets the uncomfortable sensation that a joke is being played. But on whom?

One of the year's most provocative pictures.

Incredibly well-made and with a story you won't forget, "The Imposter" is one of the better docs of the season.

The Imposter emerges as a brilliantly slippery film that demands brain-stretching consideration. Astonishing, indeed.

It's an astounding story, truly, and Bourdin is the most chillingly sympathetic sociopath: frank, remorseless, matter-of-fact.

British director Bart Layton has only slightly fictionalised this extraordinary story for his documentary, which is told more as a thriller than a statement of hard fact.

"The Imposter" is one of the best films of the year.

Now the real season begins.

After a 2-0 start, the Big Green (2-0, 0-0 Ivy) will host the University of Pennsylvania (0-2, 0-0) on national television, as both teams open up the 57th year of Ivy League football season on Saturday at Memorial Field.

Last year, Penn beat the Big Green, 22-20, in a heartbreaking loss. An annual matchup, the Quakers currently hold an all-time 45-32-2 record against Dartmouth.

?We know a little more about these guys than [the College of the] Holy Cross or Butler [University],? head coach Buddy Teevens said. ?We have great respect for them ? they run the ball very well, good team size, good team speed and a lot of experience on both sides of the ball.?

After seeing mixed results in a sloppy 13-10 win at Holy Cross last week, the Big Green offense will look to put more points up on the board behind the play of quarterback Alex Park ?14 and running back Dominick Pierre ?14.

?At this point in the year, we?re trying to be as clean [in our play] as possible,? Park said.

The Big Green offense has averaged 174 passing yards and 143 rushing yards per game this year, while maintaining the lowest penalty yardage per game in the Ivy League at 29.5 yards.

?Penn has a long history of having great defense,? Park said. ?We?re just trying to maintain our balanced attack.?

The Quakers? defense has forced turnovers in 10 of its past 11 games and currently ranks second in the Ivy League, behind only the Big Green.

?They played with more confidence against Holy Cross,? Teevens said of the Dartmouth defensive unit. ?It was a more physical kind of play.?

Dartmouth has surrendered the fewest average yards (307.5) and points (8.5) in the Ivy League, in large part due to the play of linebacker Michael Runger ?14, the reigning defensive Ivy League Player of the Week.

?The goal that we?re working toward is to have a real solid performance by both our offense and defense,? Teevens said.

Dartmouth?s special teams, which produced big plays in each of the Big Green?s first two games, must improve in preventing big kickoff and punt returns, according to Teevens.

Teevens said that the unit?s goal this week is ?just to be a little more consistent.?

Freshman quarterback Dalyn Williams ?16 will most likely see some playing time. Williams has been used in the past two games as a change-of-pace quarterback and has compiled 83 rushing yards and 50 passing yards in limited action.

The game against Penn will be broadcast nationally on NBC Sports Network, adding excitement to what should be an adrenaline-packed game. Certain alumni groups across the country are gathering to watch the game, according to Teevens.

?Our players understand and appreciate that,? Teevens said. ?I think there?s some added incentive and pride.?

While the Quakers have only lost to the Big Green once since the fall of 1997, the past three games have been decided by one possession.

?If we capitalize on our opportunities, we can win this game,? Park said.

Here is a look at what papers around the Ivy League are saying about the upcoming game.

The Daily Princetonian: Dartmouth over Penn. ?The home team has won five straight games; the road team has lost four. Even with Penn on the other side, can?t pick against that.?

The Harvard Crimson: Penn over Dartmouth. ?Yes, Dartmouth is 2-0, and yes, Penn is 0-2, but at the end of the day, the Quakers are still the stronger team, so look for them to finally get their offense rolling on Saturday night after averaging under 15 points a game in their first two contests.?

Columbia Daily Spectator: Penn over Dartmouth. ?Dartmouth may give the Quakers trouble, but Penn should be able to get back on track after starting the season 0-2 to two tough opponents.?

Yale Daily News: Dartmouth over Penn. ?Dartmouth has already shown an ability to win games on both sides of the ball.?

The Cornell Daily Sun: Dartmouth over Penn. ?They are hot.?

The Brown Daily Herald: Penn over Dartmouth. ?Penn hasn?t won yet, and Dartmouth hasn?t lost, but the Quakers have the weapons and history behind them ? they?ve lost to Big Green only once since 1997 ? to pull through. As long as they don?t throw another seven interceptions.?

The Dartmouth: Dartmouth over Penn. ?Enough about last year. Forget last year?s loss, forget Nick Schwieger ?12, forget Connor Kempe ?12. On Saturday, Park and Pierre show why this team, this year, can make some noise in the Ivy League. Dartmouth 21, Penn 17.?

White shark diets show surprising variability, vary with age and among individuals

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Many white sharks shift from fish to marine mammals as they mature, but individual sharks show surprising variability in dietary preferences.

White sharks, the largest predatory sharks in the ocean, are thought of as apex predators that feed primarily on seals and sea lions. But a new study by researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, shows surprising variability in the dietary preferences of individual sharks.

The researchers described their findings in a paper published online September 28 in PLoS ONE. They analyzed the composition of growth bands in shark vertebrae to trace variations in diet over a shark's lifetime. Stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen incorporated into an animal's tissues serve as a natural tracer of dietary inputs.

"We did find that white shark diets changed with age, as expected, but we were surprised that the patterns and extent of change differed among individuals," said Sora Kim, who led the study as a UCSC graduate student and is now at the University of Wyoming.

The researchers analyzed vertebrae of 15 adult white sharks that had been caught along the west coast (14 off California and one off Baja California). Sharks in this population consume a wide range of prey, including seals, sea lions, dolphins, fish, and squid. But not every shark eats the same mix of prey, said coauthor Paul Koch, professor of Earth and planetary sciences at UCSC.

"We confirmed that the diets of many individuals observed at seal and sea lion rookeries shift from fish to marine mammals as the sharks mature," he said. "In addition, we discovered that different individual sharks may specialize on different types of prey. These two types of flexibility in feeding behavior are difficult to document using traditional methods, but may be very important for understanding how the population is supported by the eastern Pacific ecosystem and how it may respond to changes in that ecosystem."

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently announced that it will consider whether to protect the west coast population of white sharks under the Endangered Species Act.

Tagging studies have shown that the white sharks found along the California coast have a regular migratory pattern, cruising coastal sites from late summer to early winter and moving to offshore areas during the rest of the year. While sharks within this population may have predictable movement patterns, the new study shows that there are important dietary and behavioral differences among individual sharks.

The study relied on vertebrae obtained from white shark specimens in various collections. The sharks had been caught at different times and places along the coast from 1957 to 2000. "Interestingly, we do see a small shift in diet as marine mammal populations increased after the passage of the Marine Mammal Protection Act in 1972," Kim said.

In addition to Kim and Koch, the coauthors of the paper include James Estes, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UCSC, and Tim Tinker, a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey and adjunct professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UCSC. This research was funded by the National Science Foundation.
