Thousands stay away from Angolan elections

LUANDA, Angola (AP) ? Thousands stayed away from polling stations in Luanda and thousands more were unable to vote Friday in Angola's second election in 20 years which is expected to give an easy victory to the ruling party, despite accusations of corruption and mismanagement of the country's oil and diamond riches.

Office cleaner Amalia Masungo said she chose not to vote because "they (politicians) are all bad men and I don't think my vote will make any difference."

The government was committing "the most sophisticated fraud" by excluding local election observers from critical civil society organizations and by confusing voters with a lack of information, charged election observer Elias Isaac of the Open Society Initiative of Southern Africa.

"Thousands of people are unable to vote," he told The Associated Press. "The whole system was created to exclude people rather than including as many as possible."

Earlier Friday, voters banged at the gate to one polling station which remained closed 90 minutes after voting was to start. Electoral official Delfina Manuel explained that there was no electricity and it had been too dark inside to open earlier.

The lines that grew because stations opened late quickly disappeared. The usually boisterous and noisy seaside city was abnormally quiet.

Two hours before polls were to close, two stations reported about half the registered voters had cast ballots. In 2008 elections, 87 percent of voters participated. One polling agent suggested there might be a last-minute rush of voters before polls close at 7 pm (1800 GMT).

Friday's vote was largely seen as a test of the popularity of President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, who has ruled for 33 years without being directly elected. Presidential elections were constantly postponed until last year, when the government changed the constitution so that the leader of the party with the most votes becomes president.

Voters are to elect 220 legislators from nine parties and coalitions. Preliminary results are expected by Saturday, ANGOP state news agency said.

Victory for the ruling Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola , or MPLA, would give dos Santos another five-year term.

The Web site of an underground youth movement that has been protesting for a change of government reported people were protesting at one Luanda station because their names had been transferred to distant provinces and "many are returning to their houses without any possibility to vote."

Opposition parties had objected that the National Elections Commission did not publish the electoral roll. The commission said it had sent people information by SMS messages to mobile phones and had published the information on the Internet.

Isaac estimated that fewer than 1 million Angolans have cell phones and less than 10 percent have access to the Internet in a country where more than a third of the population is illiterate.

New on the election scene is the Broad Convergence for Angola's Salvation, a coalition created in April which unites former key opposition figure Abel Chivukuvuku and Andre Gaspar Mendes de Carvalho, a former general in dos Santos' army and the son of one of Angola's most famous nationalists. Chivukuvuku had belonged to UNITA, the biggest opposition party, which won 10 percent of votes and 16 seats in the 2008 election.

Calling itself "the leader of change," the new coalition is expected to come in third place with promises to raise the minimum wage from less than $100 to $500 and to set up an agency to fight corruption. Many young people appeared to be voting for the new coalition.

"Every vote will make a difference. We have to believe in the electoral process," Braulio Silva, a 26-year-old who works for a logistics company, said as he waited in a line early Friday.

Dos Santos' party holds 191 national assembly seats after it won 2008 elections in a landslide. UNITA is expected to pick up a few more votes from people who complain about a lack of democracy and an unequal spread of wealth.

A 32-year-old IT engineer, Jose Tomas, expected that the MPLA would win in part because voters are used to the party.

"You see all those old mommas voting?" he said of a group of women wearing traditional cloth wraps. "The MPLA for them is like a cell phone: As long as it doesn't break or get stolen, they'll never change brand."

The MPLA has presided over the resurgence of Luanda, a once-decrepit seaside town that has turned into a building construction site. Human rights officials complain that poor Angolans have been forced from their downtown homes to distant suburbs with no electricity, water or transport, to make way for luxury high-rise apartment buildings.

Both UNITA and the coalition have complained of the uneven playing field in the election and the possibilities for fraud. Opposition parties are particularly concerned that votes will not be counted until they reach the National Electoral Commission in Luanda. UNITA leader Isaias Samakuva said he has confirmed that soldiers in the Military Affairs Cabinet that reports directly to the president's office have been installed there as logistical supervisors. The same thing happened in 2008 when the military was involved in transportation, distribution and handling of ballots, ballots boxes and minutes for election results, according to Chatham House, the London-based independent policy institute.

Dos Santos' party also has a near-monopoly on the national media. It has emphasized the government's reconstruction of the country after the civil war, the president's role as an "architect of peace," improved democracy, housing, educational, health and entrepreneurial projects and job creation.

Still, unemployment stands officially at 26 percent and is much higher among young people.

This southern African nation was a Cold War battlefield for 27 years, with dos Santos' MPLA backed by Cuban soldiers and a Soviet war chest, pitted against UNITA, which was backed by apartheid South Africa and the United States. Half a million people died in the war, more than 4 million ? a third of the population ? was displaced and much infrastructure was destroyed.

Since the war ended in 2002, Angola has dominated the list of the world's fastest growing economies and is sub-Saharan Africa's second-largest oil producer, after Nigeria. Oil-backed credit lines from China ? Angola is China's No. 1 oil supplier and its second biggest importer is the United States ? have fueled a building boom of houses, hospitals, schools, roads and bridges. Average life expectancy went up from 45 in 2002 to 51 in 2011.

But 87 percent of urban Angolans live in shanty towns, often with no access to clean water, according to UNICEF, and more than a third of Angolans live below the poverty line.

Anti Aging: 'Good Housekeeping' Names Top Age-Defying Products

Americans' desire for creams, salves and gadgets to mask the signs of advancing age is expected to grow the market to $114 billion by 2015 (up from $80 billion in 2011). Even in a recession, sales of "prestige beauty products" -- the high-end lines found in department stores -- have increased 11 percent, according to Nasdaq. But which ones actually work.

Good Housekeeping has the answer in its September issue's Third Annual Anti-Aging Awards. Researchers screened 283 products and ultimately 97 were tested on 661 volunteers. The magazine named 22 winners in different skincare and makeup categories.

When it came to products making anti-aging claims, "we were a little skeptical, I have to say," said Rosemary Ellis, Good Housekeeping's editor-in-chief, on the "Today" show. "Our readers and our website users love getting the information on what really works, because frankly a lot of these don't work... And these are the winners."

Check out the slideshow below for some of the gold and silver winners and Good Housekeeping for more.

US military says WikiLeaks suspect broke rules before

US military lawyers said Wednesday that Bradley Manning, the soldier accused of passing a trove of secret documents to WikiLeaks, had breached security before and knew he was breaking the law.

A pre-trial hearing for Manning, 24, who could be jailed for life if he is convicted of committing the biggest intelligence breach in American history, heard that he made an unauthorized YouTube video for his family in 2008.

He used the terms "classified" and "top secret" in that video but he was caught and received corrective training for breaking military rules, said prosecutors, who want to put the video before jurors at Manning's trial.

Manning's punishment for the YouTube video included having to present a power point presentation in which he explained what amounted to classified information and what would constitute a security breach.

The military says the information proves that Manning was fully aware of the consequences when he released a huge cache of diplomatic cables and military logs to WikiLeaks. His defense has denied the soldier knowingly aided the enemy.

Manning is alleged to have provided WikiLeaks with the haul of documents several months before he was eventually tracked down and arrested in 2010 while serving in Iraq.

"The intent behind the two acts is sufficiently similar -- wilful and was damaging to the interests of the United States," said Captain Angel Overgaard at the pre-trial hearing taking place at a military base in Maryland.

The publishing by WikiLeaks of the official documents triggered a diplomatic firestorm that hugely embarrassed American officials who were left to deal with the fallout and the disclosures also rankled key US allies.

Manning's defense argued at the hearing that making the YouTube video and the power point slides available to the jury would prejudice the former intelligence analyst's right to a fair trial.

But the military says the specific punishment Manning received shows that he could have been "aiding the enemy" and gives an insight into his character before the subsequent leak of classified documents to WikiLeaks.

Manning, who is attending this week's hearing, has not yet entered a plea in the case and his trial is penciled in to start in February -- five months later than originally planned.

96% The Imposter

All Critics (79) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (76) | Rotten (3)

Beverly Dollarhide, Nicholas's mother, says of the period after her son's disappearance, "My main goal in life at that time was not to think." Apparently, the filmmakers have taken a cue from her.

Layton's dazzling film is an exciting, edge-of-your-seat experience superior to any Hollywood mystery you're likely to see for a long time.

"The Imposter" becomes more than just a missing-persons drama. It hints at something much darker: a real-life horror story, the full truth of which may never be known.

This is one creepy mystery.

"The Imposter" initially seems to be a tutorial in identity theft, as well as a cautionary tale about the susceptibility of people who have lost a loved one. But that's not the half of it.

Layton's film joins the top ranks of nonfiction films because he recognizes that in this case no solution could be as engrossing as the questions.

As his story unfolds, one gets the uncomfortable sensation that a joke is being played. But on whom?

One of the year's most provocative pictures.

Incredibly well-made and with a story you won't forget, "The Imposter" is one of the better docs of the season.

The Imposter emerges as a brilliantly slippery film that demands brain-stretching consideration. Astonishing, indeed.

It's an astounding story, truly, and Bourdin is the most chillingly sympathetic sociopath: frank, remorseless, matter-of-fact.

British director Bart Layton has only slightly fictionalised this extraordinary story for his documentary, which is told more as a thriller than a statement of hard fact.

"The Imposter" is one of the best films of the year.

Not only is the story riveting, but the film explores huge issues that really get under our skin

The Imposter frequently sends your jaw hurtling to the floor as it tries to understand the great pretender and a family only too willing to accept him as one of their own.

When this film was over, I felt as if I had been holding my breath for 99 minutes. It is pure, delicious suspense.

The mysteries stick with you. In 20 years time, someone will leap up and shout, "Eureka!"

Think of Clint Eastwood's Changeling and multiply by the power of reality.

The month's second mind-blowing doc ... a thinker that deserves the thought.

[The] unbelievable blend of confidence trickery and seemingly wilful blindness is what fascinates most in The Imposter, and raises more tantalising and disturbing questions.

You couldn't make this stuff up - and no one would buy it as fiction. But as a documentary, it's a different matter.

Layton may be making a sophisticated point about the elusive nature of truth but at the same time, it's a point made at the expense of the Barclays.

The year's most fascinating and frightening doc so far, The Imposter delves far beneath the hysterical tabloid headlines.

It's both preposterous and horrific, and therein lies its powerful, disquieting charm.

The real imposter here is the director.

Web Design Tips You Can Try Out Today : Internet Business Blog ...

Good web design is an important part of a having a popular website. However, due to the fact that there is a seemingly endless amount of information on web design, and the fact that web design concepts are always changing, it can be difficult to learn or improve your knowledge about how to design good websites. Take heart, though; this article is going to help you out! The article discussed below gives you some very effective tips about web design.

Start investing in books and resources that help you learn to be successful with your web design. Begin with books that teach to your skill level, and progress from there. It is important to learn quickly, but you should ensure that you are not skipping any vital information!

Ask your friends who know web design if your knowledge about graphic design and server-side coding are relatively complete. You want to make sure that all of the information that you learned was truly retained; the last thing you need is to be in the middle of making a site and become lost or confused.

Use sound sparingly when creating your website. Do not aggravate your visitors by bombarding them with sound that they cannot control or turn off when they arrive at your site. You can add links with video and audio, but let the user choose whether or not to have audio as part of the experience of your website.

Visual Sitemap

To help you plan ahead, you want to make a visual sitemap. This can give you an idea of where you want to go in the future. With a visual sitemap, you will see exactly how your structure is developing. From this point, you have the ability to locate with precision any components that will require tweaking, or have yet to see more work being done with them. There?s no better way to keep track of your project than a visual sitemap.

Always check your website for broken hyperlinks. The best time to do this is just before you FTP the page over to the server. It is incredibly important to keep broken links to a minimum. If visitors encounter them often, they will disappointed and no longer come to your site. To keep this from happening, check everything to make sure that it works.

Make sure you add links to your site that allow visitors to link items they like on social networks. These links make it easy for customers to spread the word about your site and products, simultaneously expanding both your customer base and your site traffic.

Steer clear of captchas. Captchas can trigger a negative response from a viewer when it makes them perform the task just so they can view a basic webpage. Most people are likely to leave your page and go elsewhere.

As you design your website, be sure that someone other than yourself is helping you check its functionality as you go. When you finish a new site feature, have an impartial observer test it and give feedback. While a video that loads slowly may not seem too terrible in your eyes, someone else might think differently. Remember to always solicit outside feedback.

Make any logos on your website link to the home page. Nowadays, most users expect logos to have a clickable link to the home page. It?s frustrating to click on a logo and have nothing happen, and this saves you from adding a ?home? link. Having the logo as clickable makes your website easier to navigate around.

Although the tools that a host makes available for web design can help you arrange your site?s basic layout, you shouldn?t rely on them exclusively. Work your own individuality into your website by adding your own touches beyond the basics that the host provides.

Search Option

Offer a sitewide search option at the top of every page. This will ensure that visitors can access the knowledge you have to give, and that they came to your site to find. This search option is surprisingly easy to add, and will greatly improve navigation throughout your site.

Avoid using a member of your family to build your website. Regardless of how much design experience your family member brings to the table, your close personal relationship will make it difficult or impossible to properly express your satisfaction or dissatisfaction with their work.

Launching your website is just the beginning. Your design process is far from complete. You need to make sure you keep your site active. It will not be necessary to update every day, but do realize that fresh content must be a priority. This is especially true if you?re hosting videos or working with current events. There is more to updating a website than there is to updating a blog. There is a lot of work involved.

Running a site and web designing, must have a personal office. Eliminate distractions, and be certain that your space is efficient and suitable for your work. Make sure your tools are within easy access, and that you have enough space for your web design needs.

Anytime you deal with web design companies, timeliness in your bill paying is essential. After all, this company is keeping your site up and running. If you haven?t been paying them on time or completely, they may no longer feel that you are entitled to prompt service when there is a problem with the site. Meeting your billing obligations ensures rapid service and helps to build a healthy, mutually-respectful working relationship.

Domain auction websites can be excellent sources for domain names. Domain auctions sell names that someone else paid for but is no longer using. Getting the right name for your website can help increase traffic. Getting a domain name this way might cost some money, but a powerful one is worth the expense.

Do not overuse JavaScript. Even though it can give your website a more transparent and responsive look, it can give some users problems. Although JavaScript has some benefits, you need to be aware of the different types of browsers being used. Everyone who visits your site will not always have an up to date browser. Also, everyone doesn?t enable JavaScript on their browsers. These both could keep users from getting to your website.

If you are looking to hire a professional web designer, make sure you choose someone that isn?t related to you. Hiring loved ones and friends isn?t wise when you create a website. It becomes much harder to express dissatisfaction with the work, or fire someone, if you are close with them.

Meta Tags

Meta tags that are pertinent, are one of the best ways to ensure your site attracts the right visitors. Your site can show various search engines exactly what your site is all about when you have meta tags. Non descriptive or inaccurate meta tags will result in low visibility for your website.

There should be a tagline for each page in your site, that is clear and easy to understand. It needs to be the first thing the viewers sees when they follow links, so make sure the text is large and bold. This tagline let?s people know what the page is about and whether or not they should stay there or not.

Designing good web pages is key. Both the amount of information available on this topic and the changing nature of that information make it difficult to always know the state of the art. Thankfully, the article you have just read offered you a lot of relevant information. Creating an informative, accurate and useful website is not as complex as most people think

Synchronized lasers measure how light changes matter: Effects of light at atomic scale probed by mixing x-ray and optical light waves

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Light changes matter in ways that shape our world. Photons trigger changes in proteins in the eye to enable vision; sunlight splits water into hydrogen and oxygen and creates chemicals through photosynthesis; light causes electrons to flow in the semiconductors that make up solar cells; and new devices for consumers, industry, and medicine operate with photons instead of electrons. But directly measuring how light manipulates matter on the atomic scale has never been possible, until now.

An international team of scientists led by Thornton Glover of the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) used the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory to mix a pulse of superbright x-rays with a pulse of lower frequency, "optical" light from an ordinary laser. By aiming the combined pulses at a diamond sample, the team was able to measure the optical manipulation of chemical bonds in the crystal directly, on the scale of individual atoms.

The researchers report their work in the August 30, 2012 issue of the journal Nature.

Mixing x-rays with light in x-ray diffraction

X-ray and optical wave-mixing is an x-ray diffraction technique similar to that long used in solving the structures of proteins and other biological molecules in crystalline form. But in contrast to conventional diffraction, wave mixing selectively probes how light reshapes the distribution of charge in a material. It does this by imposing a distinction between x?rays scattered from optically perturbed charge and x?rays scattered from unperturbed charge.

"You can think of the electrons orbiting atoms in a material as belonging to one of two groups," says Glover. "The 'active' electrons are the outer, loosely bound valence electrons that participate in chemical reactions and form chemical bonds. The 'spectator' electrons are the ones tightly wrapped around the nucleus at the atom's core."

Glover explains that "because the x-ray photon energy is large compared to the electron binding energy, in a typical scattering experiment all electrons scatter with comparable strength and are therefore more or less indistinguishable." The core-electron signal usually swamps the weaker valence-charge signal because there are many more core electrons than valence electrons.

"So x-rays can tell you where atoms are, but they usually can't reveal how the chemically important valence charge is distributed," Glover says. "However, when light is also present with the x-rays, it wiggles some portion of the chemically relevant valence charge. X-rays scatter from this optically driven charge, and in doing so the x-ray photon energy is changed."

Pulses of 8,000-electron-volt x-rays from the LCLS are synchronized with 1.55 electron-volt pulses from an optical laser, so that both strike the diamond sample at the same time and mix to form upconverted pulses of 8,001.55 electron volts. The detector first sees the diffracted x?ray pulse, and then, after the sample is gently "rocked," the slightly more energetic mixed pulse. The optical pulse exerts localized force on the chemical bonds among the carbon atoms.

The modified x-rays have a frequency (or energy) equal to the sum of the frequencies of both the original x?ray pulse and the overlapping optical pulse. The change to a slightly higher energy provides a distinct signature, which distinguishes wave-mixing from conventional x?ray diffraction.

"Conventional diffraction does not provide direct information on how the valence electrons respond to light, nor on the electric fields that arise in a material because of this response," says Glover. "But with x-ray and optical wave mixing, the energy-modified x-rays selectively probe a material's optically responsive valence charge."

Beyond the ability to directly probe atomic-scale details of how light initiates such changes as chemical reactions or phase transitions, sensitivity to valence charge creates new opportunities to track the evolution of chemical bonds or conduction electrons in a material -- something traditional x-ray diffraction does poorly. Different components of the valence charge can be probed by tuning the so-called optical pulse; higher-frequency pulses of extreme ultraviolet light, for example, probe a larger portion of valence charge.

Because mixing x-ray and optical light waves creates a new beam, which shows up as a slightly higher-energy peak on a graph of x?ray diffraction, the process is called "sum frequency generation." It was proposed almost half a century ago by Isaac Freund and Barry Levine of Bell Labs as a technique for probing the microscopic details of light's interactions with matter, by separating information about the position of atoms from the response of valence charge exposed to light.

But sum frequency generation requires intense x-ray sources unavailable until recently. SLAC's LCLS is just such a source. It's a free-electron laser (FEL) that can produce ultrashort pulses of high-energy "hard" x-rays millions of times brighter than synchrotron light sources, a hundred times a second.

"The breadth of the science impact of LCLS is still before us," says Jerome Hastings, a professor of photon science at the LCLS and an author of the Nature article. "What is clear is that it has the potential to extend nonlinear optics into the x-ray range as a useful tool. Wave mixing is an obvious choice, and this first experiment opens the door."

Diamonds are just the beginning

Glover's team chose diamond to demonstrate x-ray and optical wave mixing because diamond's structure and electronic properties are already well known. With this test bed, wave mixing has proved its ability to study light-matter interactions on the atomic scale and has opened new opportunities for research.

"The easiest kinds of diffraction experiments are with crystals, and there's lots to learn," Glover says. "For example, light can be used to alter the magnetic order in advanced materials, yet it's often unclear just what the light does, on the microscopic scale, to initiate these changes."

Looking farther ahead, Glover imagines experiments that observe the dynamic evolution of a complex system as it evolves from the moment of initial excitation by light. Photosynthesis is a prime example, in which the energy of sunlight is transferred through a network of light-harvesting proteins into chemical reaction centers with almost no loss.

"Berkeley Lab's Graham Fleming has shown that this virtually instantaneous energy transfer is intrinsically quantum mechanical," Glover says. "Quantum entanglement plays an important role, as an excited electron simultaneously samples many spatially separated sites, probing to find the most efficient energy-transfer pathway. It would be great if we could use x-ray and optical wave mixing to make real-space images of this process as it's happening, to learn more about the quantum aspects of the energy transfer."

Such experiments will require high pulse-repetition rates that free electron lasers have not yet achieved. Synchrotron light sources like Berkeley Lab's Advanced Light Source, although not as bright as FELs, have inherently high repetition rates and, says Glover, "may play a role in helping us assess the technical adjustments needed for high repetition-rate experiments."

Light sources with repetition rates up to a million pulses per second may someday be able to do the job. Glover says, "FELs of the future will combine high-peak brightness with high repetition rate, and this combination will open new opportunities for examining the interactions of light and matter on the atomic scale."

Nicaragua probes drug network of fake journalists

(AP) ? Nicaraguan authorities are investigating what they call a vast network of drug criminals behind a seizure of $9.2 million in vans driven by people pretending to be part of a Mexican television news crew.

National Police's spokesman Fernando Borge says the destination of the money for which 18 people have been detained was Costa Rica. He says it was a payment for a load of drugs.

Borge told The Associated Press Monday that a former police agent heard in Honduras a conversation from those now detained of their plans to drive through Nicaragua with the money. He said the man alerted authorities in Managua.

Initially, authorities had said they found $7 million in smuggled cash, but on Monday they said it was more money than they first thought.

X-ray chemist solves cholera mystery: Blood group O most susceptible

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? The likelihood of becoming seriously ill from cholera depends on your blood group. It is possible to find a new remedy for the feared illness by studying the molecular structure in the toxin in the cholera bacteria.

Three to five million people are infected by cholera ever year. The mortality rate is high: one hundred thousand people die from the feared illness every year.

'Cholera depends on the blood group. Some blood groups have an increased risk of becoming seriously ill', says Professor Ute Krengel in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oslo.

When cholera bacteria multiply in the body, they create an awful toxin called cholera toxin. The toxin must bind to the cell membrane before it can penetrate further into the intestinal cell and create trouble.

By studying the molecular structure of cholera toxins, researchers can discover how the toxins bind to intestinal cells at the level of the atom.

Krengel's goal is to find a new medicine that prevents the cholera toxin from binding to the intestine and that ensures that the toxin is harmlessly dispelled from the body.

Cholera leads to violent diarrhea. The patient can lose up to 12 litres of fluids every 24 hours. The treatment is a saline fluid replacement.

'It must be administered as soon as possible and in large quantities. If the patient is unconscious already, the saline solution must be given intravenously. Antibiotics are of no use', explains Professor Gunnar Bjune in the Institute of Health and Society at the University of Oslo.

Blood group O is the worst

The cholera bacterium is originally from Bangladesh, but in the past two centuries, it has spread to much of the world and has established a firm footing in many Asian and African countries.

'Patients with blood group O are most at risk of becoming seriously ill. Those with blood groups A, B or AB are more protected against cholera', says Ute Krengel.

The Bangladeshi population is evenly distributed between blood groups O, A and B. In Africa, most people have blood group O. Nearly everyone in the indigenous population in Latin America have group O. When cholera hits these areas, it hits especially hard.

In collaboration with the Oslo University Hospital and the Biotechnology Centre, Ute Krengel's research group studies whether the probability of becoming seriously ill with cholera depends on blood groups. By studying the molecular structure in the toxin in the cholera bacterium, it is possible to find a new remedy for the feared illness, determine how strongly the cholera toxin binds, how long it takes to bind, and how long it stays bound to receptors on the intestinal cells.

Fools the bacteria

The cholera toxin binds to small receptors on the intestinal wall. The receptors consist of small straws with attached sugar molecules. They are to protect the cells against harmful intruders. Unfortunately, the receptors can be exploited.

'We want to develop new medicines that bind to the cholera toxin so that it cannot bind to the intestinal cells.'

The cholera toxin consists of two parts. The researchers study the lower part, which binds to the receptors.

'We have discovered that the cholera toxin binds differently than previously thought.'

The toxin is a protein. Proteins are built from amino acids. The Krengel group will now study how important the various amino acids are in the binding process and which amino acids bind the most.

In order to penetrate into the intestinal cells, the cholera toxin must first get through mucous layer.

'Our results suggest that the cholera toxin uses longer to penetrate the mucous layer if the patients have blood group antibodies in the mucous.

Four out of five people have blood group antibodies in the mucous. Those with blood group O are the least protected and therefore get sicker than others.'

Harmless cholera model

In its advanced experiments, the Krengel group has created a biological model of how the cholera toxin enters intestinal cells. They do not use real cholera bacteria. Doing so would be too dangerous. Instead, they use E.coli bacteria, which is the primary model bacterium for cell biologists.

'They are easy to make and much quicker and safer to work with. We must grow large quantities in order to study the bindings', says PhD Candidate Julie Heggelund, whose background is in molecular biology.

To create artificial cholera toxins-or to be precise: to create the lower part of the toxin-she must manipulate the genes in E. coli bacteria. When she has produced the lower part, she kills the bacteria in a pressure cooker. The receptors are synthetic sugar molecules.

X-ray control

Microscopes are of no use in finding the structure of the cholera toxin and receptors: the resolution is not good enough. Researchers must rely on x-rays. X-rays have such a short wavelength that most penetrate empty space in molecules. However, before they can get started with the x-ray machine, the researchers must crystallise the toxin and receptor molecules. This is Krengel's speciality.

By interpreting the x-rays that are spread by the crystal, researchers can calculate what the structure of the atom looks like. This can be compared to sending laser light through a sieve. Studying the light that is spread by the mesh of the sieve allows researchers to calculate what the sieve looks like.

Each exposure is two-dimensional. To create a three-dimensional image, researchers irradiate the toxin crystal up to 500 times from different angles. Though the imaging only takes a few days, the interpretation of the molecular structure can take several months.

Julie Heggelund also takes such x-ray images in Grenoble. Thanks to a large x-ray machine with a circumference of nearly one kilometre, the imaging can be done in as little as two minutes.

Japan takes LLWS title, beats Tennessee 12-2

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) ? Fast friends in the Little League dorms, the boys from Japan and Tennessee played one last game Sunday to decide which team would be crowned World Series champions.

Noriatsu Osaka's big bat helped send the team from Tokyo home with the title banner.

Osaka's third home run of the game put an exclamation point on Japan's 12-2 victory over Tennessee in five innings in the Little League World Series championship game Sunday.

The 12-year-old Osaka added a triple for good measure in his 4-for-4 afternoon. In a symbolic gesture, Japan's players jogged the traditional postgame victory lap carrying the flags for both their home country and the United States.

"We had such a great time in Pennsylvania and we really played a good game today. It was kind of a, 'Thanks,'" Osaka said through an interpreter.

Starter Kotaro Kiyomiya struck out eight in four innings and added an RBI single for Japan. The game ended in the fifth after Osaka's third homer made it a 10-run game.

"We thought we played the best in the tournament so far, especially to win by the 10-run rule in the finals," said 12-year-old Rintaro Hirano, who homered in the fourth to make it 10-1.

A day after pounding out a 24-16 win over California in the U.S. title game, the Goodlettsville, Tenn., sluggers could only muster two hits ? solo homers by Brock Myers and Lorenzo Butler.

It was a bittersweet final for two teams that grew close during their two weeks in South Williamsport. They exchanged customary postgame handshakes at the plate before Japan received the World Series championship banner and took their warning-track run.

"Tennessee was our best friends in the U.S. division," Kiyomiya said.

Japan's jog finally stopped in front of the team's giddy cheering section as proud family members and friends stood shoulder-to-shoulder to take pictures through the infield fence.

There were so many highlights, including five home runs off Tennessee pitching.

That was more than enough offense for 13-year-old ace Kiyomiya, who had a fastball clocked in the high-70s. The right-hander with the hitch in mid-delivery pitched like a big league ace in allowing just one hit.

Regardless, this is still a banner year for Goodlettsville after its exhausting victory Saturday over Petaluma, Calif., for the U.S. championship. That game set a record for most combined runs in the World Series.

The thrilling victory kept the Tennessee players and their families up late into the night.

"(The parents) must have partied harder than the kids did," manager Joey Hale said. "I knew we'd be flat today."

Tennessee lost a 10-run lead in the bottom of the sixth of that game before scoring nine times the next inning to finally put away Petaluma in a Little League classic. Even more impressively, Butler had three homers and a record nine RBIs ? a feat so unique the 12-year-old's name became a trending topic on Twitter.

Butler went deep again off reliever Osaka in the fifth ? Butler's fourth homer in two days ? to cut the lead to 10-2 and give Goodlettsvile some hope. Tennessee's mini-mashers have proven they can break out any time at the plate.

"It feels really good and it was really great," Butler said simply about his hitting exploits. He said his three homers Saturday were the longest he had hit all season.

Its pitching depth sapped, Tennessee turned to right-hander Justin Smith to start against Japan ? the first time the 12-year-old had pitched in the World Series or in Southeast regional tournament.

"Everybody knew our pitching was depleted and we were bound for a letdown," Hale said. "I'm not saying we were going to beat Japan. I think they were the best team here at everything by far, pitching, hitting. But I think last night is how we want to be remembered."

Leadoff hitter Osaka, 12, didn't waste any time with a first-pitch triple to the right-field corner in the first. Kiyomiya delivered his RBI single two batters later to get the scoring started.

Osaka then homered in the second to left-center, just in front of the "Little League" sign above the fence, before leading off the fourth with his second homer, this time to center, for a 6-1 lead.

The Kitasuna league all-star team from Tokyo won Japan's eighth Little League title and second in three seasons.

While his players danced around in delight after the game, skipper Yoichi Kubo teared up. He kept his composure after managing a team that won the World Series in 2001, "but I was crying this time when we won this game as world champion," he said.

Smith pitched admirably in a tough spot, allowing five runs and seven hits over three innings while striking out three. His team was trying to make history as the first squad from Tennessee to win youth baseball's biggest prize.

Goodlettsville also was the first Tennessee team to advance to South Williamsport since Morristown in 1987. The suburban Nashville crew counts among its fans Rays ace David Price, who is from Murfreesboro.

They might be done with baseball for now, but the celebration is just beginning back home. On Tennessee's social calendar is a visit to the Vanderbilt season opener Thursday night against South Carolina.

"When we get home, it's going to be a carnival," Hale said.

Tips For Success With Your Article Marketing Plan | DoArticles.com

You have heard the claims made for article marketing, and perhaps think they are exaggerated, but a closer look will find much truth in them. It is very competitive, but simple to make work for your business without gimmicks. To succeed with article marketing you must fully understand the techniques and strategies that make it so effective. Learn from the tips that were outlined in this informative article.

Don?t write articles in a way that lets people tell that they?re built around keywords. If you say a keyword more than five times in an article, both your readers and search engines will turn away from you. Avoid using the keyword more than 5 times for best results.

TIP! As you submit content to diverse websites and directories, you should be more concerned with quality than quantity. Try submitting different versions of keyword-rich content, instead of submitting duplicate articles.

Article marketing requires a fair amount of learning before you can get started, so consider practicing on a personal blog. If you choose to do this, this will help you gain the experience that you need when you decide to start marketing your company.

Article Marketing

It is entirely possible to make a substantial income not having paid a dime, while working at article marketing. The most common strategy for article marketing success, though is to combine personal efforts with those of paid contractors. You will make more with article marketing if you invest the time and money it requires.

TIP! Unless other websites are deleting the articles that you set up, these will remain online and can be used in the future to bring web traffic to a specific destination. Articles can also be used to promote other articles to greatly expand readership and networking.

The average reader spends no more than a minute reviewing a webpage for a service or product, so when you market your article, you need to make sure that you can get across your main points in that short period of time. Never use vocabulary that might be above the heads of your audience. And keep to the point. Using lists and bullet points are also great ways to focus on a few specific points.

Your content should sync nicely with your chosen topic. If a visitor reaches your site and doesn?t find that it honestly depicts what you said it would, they will likely never return. Search engine spiders will also see this, so it?s best to not do it.

Your articles should be both honest and original. If your readers feel that you are honest, it can help you to develop a relationship with them. If you continue to build that relationship, they may view you as an expert and seek you out when they need more information on the subject.

TIP! A key component in article marketing is knowing how to select the best keywords. While there are companies that charge hundreds of dollars for keyword services, Google has an excellent Keyword Tool that supplies great results, and it doesn?t cost a cent.

Write a good summary that will have readers itching to read some more of your work. Summaries that ask common questions or promise to solve common problems are a good way to get readers engaged. If you are able to get a person to visit your site to read an article, you have shown yourself that it really does work.

Article writing differs from impartial reporting. You will often want to use words that provide readers with insights into your feelings and thoughts about what you?re covering in your article. People dislike articles that are too formal and impersonal. As a result, they may not revisit your site, which could result in reduced sales.

When marketing your online content, make sure you are marketing the content and not using it as a way to sell yourself as someone knowledgeable and competent. You should try to give them quality articles that will help them. If you follow this plan your readers can decide for themselves that you are indeed competent.

Article Distribution Services

Article distribution services are great for reaching a larger audience with your articles. An article distribution service will send your article to many directories, saving you time and effort. Quality article distribution services cost money, so do a cost-benefit analysis to determine if the service is worth it to you.

Focus on providing useful or valuable information in your articles. Everyone wants to think that your article is giving them some important information. If you can deliver, they will be back.

TIP! Some writers have found success by writing as though they are speaking to a friend or acquaintance. This helps to ensure a light hearted tone and it banishes that technical feeling and know-it-all vibe that many sites have.

Make sure that your article includes either bullet or numbered lists. Articles in a list form are easier to understand and faster to read. Bulleted information gives a signal to readers that the information is important, so they focus more on what is said.

It is important to pay attention to article directory rules. Different directories have different submission guidelines.

Do research on popular keywords and how to include them in your articles. The right keywords can help you drive more traffic, which means more readers, to your articles.

TIP! If you choose to share content, see how the person with whom you are sharing intends you use your content. Also, make sure your contract allows you to retain certain rights as the original author.

Well written and interesting articles can really make all the difference with your article marketing efforts. This gives your readers the best of both worlds because you are consistently providing useful content through multiple articles. After you have passed the initial stage of learning how to write good articles, the process of writing consistent quality content will becomes easier and faster.

Let your readers know how your article can help them at a glance. Your title should explain to your visitors the benefits that can be derived from reading your particular piece. If they can see what they could potentially get from it, the odds are higher that they will actually read through it.

Such a directory can still help you get direct traffic and produce repeat readers. Some of the best No Follow directories are: Buzzle, AtriclAlley, ArticlesFactory and ArticleBase. To get the most out for your money, submit to these four directories.

TIP! A vital factor of article marketing is having some sort of attention grabber. There are many different strategies for grabbing a reader?s attention, so use the one that works best for the situation at hand.

The best way to get backlinks is simply by creating useful content that other people will be inclined to link to. It can seem appealing to just pump out some low quality articles to get your site full. If you do use spun articles, make sure that each article provides relevant content and is not just used to fill up space. If you write high quality content, it will attract other webmasters to link back to you.

Make use of headlines to compel readers to read your articles. If the headline is dull, common, or unclear, then there is only the smallest chance that many people will end up reading the whole article. The title should do as much as possible to persuade people to continue reading the rest of the article.

Article Marketing

TIP! Online programs are updated on a very regular basis, so make a habit of seeing what the latest tool available is that can help you to compose new marketing literature. New innovations are being created all the time to help you become more efficient with your article marketing.

Utilize the advise in this article to get the most from your article marketing endeavors. A successful article marketing program is a less expensive approach to getting your website noticed and repeat visitors

Tips For Speaking To A Travel Insurance Agent | Travel Insurance

A trip can be a great way to relax cares away, or experience a part of the world that is unlike anything that a vacationer has at home. Though both airfare and hotel costs are up, many Americans find it worthwhile to travel at least once a year, and more if they have the funds available to do so. While most trips go off exactly as planned, it is possible for issues to arise that may affect either the trip itself, or transportation to and from the destination. For example, the recent volcano explosion in Iceland had a significant impact on the travel plans of thousands of vacationers. For those that had purchased travel insurance policies, this became an inconvenience that was paid for in large part by the insurance plan. For those without, a possible financial crisis was the result. Before traveling to any other country destination, it is wise to speak to a travel insurance agent.

While most travel insurance agents do have the best interests of their clients at heart, it is always important to know what to ask a travel insurance agent as well as what to expect from their reply. The job of a travel insurance agent is to provide coverage for those traveling abroad in a variety of different categories. The most common are health and transportation, as well as cancellation insurance in the case of a booking being cancelled due to weather or instability in a country. Without insurance, many of these issues will not present a problem, and the likelihood of having to use insurance is slim. However, when insurance is needed, not having it can easily result in a loss of money equal to or greater than the cost of the vacation itself.

When speaking with an agent about travel insurance polices, ask about coverage specific to the intended destination. The agent should be able to provide information about health and transportation coverage and exactly what type of benefits and treatment will be offered in the case of a medical emergency or if a plane cannot leave due to storms or other inclement weather. As well, the agent should be able to provide specifics. While it is certainly possible that they will not have all data on-hand, a call back within a day should take place, and all of the data should be current and accurate. Generalities or vague promises are not worth anything if a catastrophic event should occur ? write down what an agent says and make sure that the policy sold reflects what was stated.

While travel insurance can be expensive, typically a percentage of the total trip price, the piece of mind is often worth it.

Stocks fall on raft of disappointing earnings

HONG KONG (AP) ? A raft of disappointing earnings results helped push down global stocks markets Wednesday, as did investor uncertainty over whether European policymakers would take action to stem the continent's simmering debt crisis.

Energy and commodity shares led declines in Asia as major oil and gas companies reported disappointing earnings as the global economic outlook ? and energy demand ? remained uncertain. Stocks also lost ground after Japan, Asia's second biggest economy, reported falling back into a trade deficit in July.

In early European trading, the FTSE 100 index of leading British companies lost 0.9 percent to 5,804.73 while Germany's DAX dropped 0.6 percent to 7,041.04. France's CAC 40 slipped 0.6 percent to 3,492.53.

U.S. stocks were poised to fall. Dow futures were down 0.2 percent to 13,186.00 while broader S&P 500 futures slid 0.3 percent to 1,409.70.

In Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index shed 0.3 percent to close at 9,131.74, while South Korea's Kospi dropped 0.4 percent to 1,935.19. Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1.1 percent to 19,887.78, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dipped 0.2 percent to 4,376.00.

In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite Index slid 0.5 percent to 2,107.71. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index lost 0.7 percent to 884.73.

Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan, New Zealand, Thailand and the Philippines also fell.

Markets across Asia fell as poor corporate results started trickling in.

Australia's Woodside Petroleum Ltd. fell 3.1 percent after the energy company reported that first-half profit fell 1.9 percent.
