93% The Sessions

All Critics (151) | Top Critics (39) | Fresh (141) | Rotten (10)

Achieves its sunny disposition by pulling punches.

A funny, tender and mostly unsentimentalized movie about physical and emotional triumph.

Forced to do all his acting with his face, Hawkes displays the kind of camera-arresting capability that has earned others Oscar nominations.

This is a crowd-pleaser of the finest sort.

Using only his tilted head, his eyes, nose, and mouth and that quizzical voice, Hawkes brings O'Brien to life.

This is one of the best, and certainly one of the best-acted, films of the year. I can't think of another film that mixed compassion and carnality in such an eloquent way.

The laughs are always gentle, which is descriptive of the film as a whole, as it strives to reconnect cinematic sex with shared humanity.

Vera is something of a missed opportunity here.

A movie about sex that shows a whole lot of sex, but isn't sex-obsessed. The Sessions grabs you in the heart rather than the loins.

An inspiring tale that celebrates the human spirit, underscores the value of connections, and laughs at the beautifully embarrassing urges that make us what we are.

Deeply moving. The Oscar-worthy (John) Hawkes invests his character with a sense of grace and humor that nullifies any potential pity. This is a great movie for adults and even for older adolescents.

It is rare to watch a movie where sex is treated with maturity, religion is treated with respect and characters are so heart-warmingly written and portrayed.

Raw, unrestrained and sympathetic without giving in to melodrama, 'The Sessions' is about a man facing a physical challenge who decides he wants to become intimate with a woman.

An intelligent, funny, insightful film that offers a frank examination of sex. It's not prurient or titillating, just truthful.

A remarkable actor, John Hawkes, gives a remarkable performance as a remarkable character.

Surprisingly funny and touching.

Presents the sensitive O'Brien as a brave, funny, unselfish and unlikely romantic-fantasy dream hero for disappointed, weary or jaded older female moviegoers.

The uplifting struggle for living a life of dignity for paralyzed from the neck down polio victim Mark O'Brien.

The sex scenes are frank and explicit, but never cheap and exploitative. (Yes, they get naked. Grow up.) The nudity isn't airbrushed pin-up perfection, but raw and real - and all the more lovely and moving because of it.

Taking the good with the bad, this isn't a terrible movie, though it is being rather overhyped. I found myself laughing a lot and enjoying the transformations the actors go through, but an unengaging story only serves to drag it down.

A film, inspired by the life of the late poet-journalist Mark O'Brien, that celebrates the relationship between physical and emotional intimacy.

Not just another weepy drama of overcoming odds, a My Left Foot with a different appendage. The Sessions is often brazenly funny, not from shocking dialogue but characters reacting the way people do, especially with such a flustering subject as sex.

an unusually frank and frequently humorous meditation on the transformative power of connection

Take away the nudity and the frank sex talk and you'd pretty much be left with a high-minded TV movie -- with unusually good actors.

5 Christmas videos of cats, dogs and kids guaranteed to make you ...

Nothing can lift spirits better than a glass of spiked eggnog ? or a funny YouTube video. In honor of the holiday season, I?ve rounded up a few favorites featuring pets.

?

Dog receives 210 bottles for Christmas

Some dogs prefer a good Nylabone. Others go batty for a Kong filled with peanut butter. The pooch in this video quickly learns that 210 empty water bottles serve as a wacky, wild and wonderful way to say, ?Merry Christmas.? Don?t miss his head shake at the end. Special thanks to Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan for sharing this sweet video on Facebook.

?

Santa Claws

Four years ago, animator Simon Tofield introduced a frisky feline to the world in a video clip called ?Cat Man Do.? 38 million downloads later, those simple line drawings of a cat have spawned a mini empire that includes books, games and a line of ceramic cat bowls. Tofield?s holiday video playfully captures all the reasons that cats should be kept far from the Christmas tree. (And don't miss these?25?real cats in, on and under Christmas trees.)

?

Papa finally gets a puppy

Jess Santana?s grandfather finally gets the Christmas gift he has always wanted ? an adorably wrinkly English bulldog puppy. Try not to get misty-eyed as he reaches for the new addition. For those who plan to adopt a pet this holiday season, check out items you really need to start things off on the right foot.

?

Cats discover Christmas tree, but no gifts

There?s nothing like that moment when a child ? or a pet ? first lays eyes on the Christmas tree. But Casey and Sassy can barely contain their disdain after learning that they have to wait until Dec. 25 for their presents. ??

?

We?re getting a dog!

I cannot decide which part of this video is my favorite. Perhaps it?s when the youngest child grimaces after opening her gift and finding a dog brush. I also love when the kids squeal after meeting their newly adopted dog, which causes the dog to run in the other direction. Fortunately, the kids and Daisy lived happily ever after. Here are tips to help kids and pets peacefully coexist long after you put away the tree and the tinsel.

?

Have a lovely holiday.

Is the Amazon Rainforest Drying Out?

The trees and vegetation of the Peruvian Amazon are adapting to a warmer, drier future?but can they adapt fast enough?

amazon-fragmentLAND CLEARING: Smoke rises from a fire set to clear land for farming or pasture outside Tarapoto, Peru. Roads and fields fragment the forest, drying it faster, changing precipitation patterns and making it more difficult for species to shift their ranges to adapt to climate change. Image: © BARBARA FRASER

TARAPOTO, Peru? For tropical ecologist Gregory Asner, flying over the Peruvian Amazon from the town of Tarapoto is like traveling back in time. Modern houses, rice paddies and oil palm plantations give way to steep, forested mountains and then to green, unbroken forest that curves toward the horizon.

Suddenly the tree canopy below the twin-engine plane turns a mottled gray-brown, a sign of drought damage that he estimates may affect as many as half the trees.

In this remote corner of Peru?s Ucayali region, Asner, a tropical ecologist at the Carnegie Institution for Science at Stanford University, is afraid he is seeing the future. In the last few years this patch of forest has been hit by two ?once-in-a-century droughts??one in 2005 and another in 2010. These dry spells may become more frequent as temperatures in the tropical North Atlantic Ocean rise and as humans burn thousands of square kilometers of forest for farming. Although it has seen warmer temperatures in the past, the western Amazon is under siege now from a combination of a warming climate and human population growth that it has never faced before, and scientists are scrambling to determine whether existing protected areas will be enough to buffer against the changes to come.

Behind the plane Asner glimpses smoke rising from fires set to clear land for farming. Migration from the Andean highlands has boosted Peru?s Amazonian states to the top of the population growth chart, and the influx of people is taking a toll on the forest.

Peru?s Ministry of Environment?using satellite images and Carnegie-provided software?calculates that the country lost about 6,475 square kilometers of forest, an area the size of Delaware, between 2005 and 2009, up from some 4,550 square kilometers in the five previous years. Losing forest reduces precipitation, further stressing the remaining trees. ?About 50 percent of the rain that falls in the Amazon is generated by the forest itself, through transpiration and evaporation,? Asner says. ?Deforestation exacerbates the drought problem, because it removes that internal engine.?

Clearing fields and pastures also leaves more exposed forest edges, drying out the interior and making it more likely to burn if an agricultural fire escapes. Fires during the 2005 and 2010 droughts added 3.8 gigatons of carbon to the atmosphere, according to Simon Lewis, a forest ecologist at University College London. In recent genetic studies Lewis found that Amazonian trees have weathered past climatic warming, but the changes were slower then and were not exacerbated by humans, he says.

Faced with warmer, drier conditions, trees have three options:

?Individuals can acclimate, species can adapt or migrate, or they go extinct,? says Kenneth Feeley, a biologist at Florida International University. A floral species can expand its range into a cooler region, but only as fast as seed dispersal allows. Feeley, who studies trees on the eastern slope of the Peruvian Andes, was surprised to see range changes there in just a few years. ?Species are moving upslope about three vertical meters a year?that?s really fast,? he says, although perhaps not fast enough. ?Based on the climate change that?s already happening, they need to move nine or 10 vertical meters a years.?

In the lowlands, deforestation reduces the areas to which species can move, and fields, pastures and roads create barriers to dispersal. Peru has some large protected areas, such as Man? National Park, where Feeley does his work, but scientists don?t know if they are big enough?or in the right places?to allow species to migrate in a rapidly changing climate.

Labor headache on Broadway may be averted

NEW YORK (AP) ? A union representing hundreds of Broadway theater cleaners, porters, elevator operators and bathroom attendants reached a tentative agreement with theater producers to avert a strike, both sides said Monday.

The potential deal must still be ratified by the 250 theater workers represented by the 32BJ union, a process expected to be completed by next week. Details of the deal were not immediately revealed.

"This is a fair agreement that addresses the concerns of our members, the men and women who work hard every day to keep theaters safe, clean and running for the millions of theatergoers who come to Broadway from around the world," said Shirley Aldebol, vice president of 32BJ.

Members of the union last week authorized a strike if an acceptable new deal wasn't reached by the end of the year. The current contact ends Dec. 30. Workers are seeking pay increases and better health care benefits.

The Broadway League, which represents producers and theater owners, said the tentative agreement came after productive negotiations.

Any strike would have affected workers at 32 of Broadway's 40 theaters where the 32BJ has a contract, including all the Shubert, Nederlander and Jujamcyn-owned theaters, as well as the Circle in the Square Theatre.

The most recent major strike on Broadway was in late 2007, when a 19-day walkout dimmed the lights on more than two dozen shows and cost producers and the city millions of dollars in lost revenue.

The 32BJ, an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union, has more than 120,000 total members, with most concentrated in the Northeast. It represents janitors, property maintenance workers, doormen, security officers, window cleaners and food service workers. The Coalition of Broadway Unions and Guilds had backed 32BJ in its strike authorization.

decorated going: health and fitness: Helpful Tips For Thyroid Natural ...

Some of the well known choices are hormone replacement therapy or drugs, radiation and surgery. Several pharmaceutical drugs endorsed by medical professionals are available currently. However, they may also come with many side effects including weight loss,, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, nervousness and irritability. Hence, you have to be careful to get the drugs checked with the concerned authorities so that you can start on the treatment right away.
The diseases that are connected to thyroid are a result of the mismanaged production problem that may result in release of too many or too less hormones or even in incorrect response by tissues. Since thyroid is the main gland that controls metabolism, any high or low activity can bear a huge impact on the overall health of the person.? Some of the issues that may crop up on account of low thyroid gland activity include weight gain, dry skin, constipation, hair loss and brittle nails. The various conditions such as rapid respiration and pulse rate, restlessness, high basal metabolic activity are a result of hyper thyroid. There are quite a few options when it comes to thyroid natural remedies.

Fill your diet with less goitrogenic items such as millet, cauliflower, kale, broccoli, rutabaga, cabbage and brussel sprouts. Goitrogens occur in these food substances from the start that inhibit thyroid. Eat gluten free foods and a majority of raw foods. Consume organic food products that contain no pesticides and harmful chemicals. The use of bentonite clay daily is advised by mixing one teaspoon of it in water. It can also be utilized as a mask which you can press it over your neck in order to eliminate the toxins.

The production of thyroid hormone depends heavily on iodine. Various natural treatments available today are quite effective in the production of thyroid hormone. There used to be plenty of iodine in vegetables and fruits but the soil is very iodine depleted in most areas today. There are various sources of iodine such as fish, potatoes, banana, seafood such as fish, parsley and strawberries. The body requires an amino acid known as tyrosine in order to produce thyroid hormones by consuming iodine. Tyrosine is in foods like mustard greens, spinach, seaweed, non GMO soy, meats and fish.

The fact is that vegetable and polyunsaturated oils that are commonly used everywhere is not good for health as it aids in the promotion of disease related to thyroid. Tissue response to thyroid hormones in inhibited by unsaturated fats. The use of coconut oil is well documented for this purpose. The thyroid hormones are mainly responsible for metabolic activity in the body. This metabolism is aided by coconut oil. The fusion of the two work to the benefit of the body and help in maintaining optimum metabolic rate. Thyroid performs better thanks to coconut oil.
All the organs, tissues and cells that are present in the human body are majorly affected by the hormones that are produced by the thyroid gland. This article focuses on actions that we can for the different options for thyroid natural treatment to optimize the functioning of this very important gland.

Google could emerge unscathed from federal web search probe - WSJ

(Reuters) - Google may not face any major repercussions from the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) two-year-old anti-trust investigation into its web search business, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The FTC might drop the investigation sometime this week based on voluntary changes Google will make to its search practices, rather than making the company sign a formal settlement called a consent decree, the Journal said.

The web search investigation examined whether Google tweaks its search results to disadvantage rivals in travel, shopping and other specialized searches.

Google will probably still be required to sign a consent decree for a separate federal investigation into the licensing of mobile-technology patents it acquired when it took over phone maker Motorola Mobility, the Journal said.

An end to the federal probe into Google's search business would allow the company to avoid getting mired in anti-trust investigations like rival Microsoft Corp endured in the early 2000s.

The European Commission, which is also probing Google, is expected to announce a decision next month.

The FTC declined to comment to the Wall Street Journal and could not be reached for comment by Reuters outside of regular business hours. Google could not be reached for comment by Reuters outside of regular business hours.

Barclays may cut up to 2,000 investment banking jobs: WSJ

(Reuters) - Barclays Plc plans to cut as many as 2,000 jobs in its investment bank as part of a broad restructuring of the company, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the British bank's plans.

The paper said senior Barclays executives are planning to recommend that the bank cut between 1,000 and 2,000 jobs, likely to be concentrated in Asia and continental Europe.

The job cuts are expected to be announced early next year, the paper said, adding that Barclays executives are aiming to protect the bank's strong U.S. and U.K. franchises. (http://link.reuters.com/vum64t)

Goldman Sachs analysts have suggested that Barclays could cut 15 percent of investment bank staff, or 3,500 of its 23,300 employees, as part of a broader strategic review by Chief Executive Antony Jenkins, who took over in August.

Barclays declined to comment on the details of the plan.

While reforms at Barclays are not expected to be as radical as those of rivals UBS and Royal Bank of Scotland , who are pulling back sharply, the actions of competitors may sway plans. UBS's pullback, for example, could open gaps that Barclays may want to exploit.

The cutback plans remain in flux, and some senior executives are pushing for a more aggressive purge, the business daily said, citing one person with knowledge of the discussions.

The potential investment-banking cuts are likely to be part of a larger number of job reductions across the entire company, the Wall Street Journal said, as Barclays executives consider areas such as information technology ripe for layoffs.

The Cataclysm: "That Whole Mountain Range Had Just Exploded"

A few seconds after the beginning of the directed blast, life within roughly ten kilometers (6.2 miles) of Mount St. Helens within the blast zone was about to be extinguished.

?Directed blasts,? Rick Hoblitt, Dan Miller, and James Vallance wrote in their 1981 paper on the blast deposits, ?typically devastate large areas? and kill essentially all above-ground life within these areas.? Human and animal, arthropod and avian, tree, bush and flower, all perished. Between its kinetic and heat energy, the directed blast released the equivalent of 24 megatons of energy in a few short moments. This is one megaton short of the theoretical yield of the largest hydrogen bombs the United States ever created; the first nuclear bombs to destroy a city were only 15 and 21 kilotons, respectively ? orders of magnitude smaller. Instruments measuring the blast saw ?amplitude variations comparable to those caused by detonation of nuclear devices in the 1-10 mt [megaton] range.?

There are words for eruptions like this. They belong to the Volcanic Explosivity Index. The qualitative description for Mount St. Helens?s climactic eruption is ?paroxysmal,? but it achieved a mere ?very large? as a descriptor. Some versions of the VEI become speechless at that point; others scale up to ?huge,? ?humongous? and ?indescribable.? Mount St. Helens was just above average.

In the figure, the volumes of several past explosive eruptions and the corresponding VEI are shown. Numbers in parentheses represent total volume of erupted pyroclastic material (tephra, volcanic ash, and pyroclastic flows) for selected eruptions; the volumes are for uncompacted deposits. Each step increase represents a ten fold increase in the volume of erupted pyroclastic material.

What made her so wildly destructive was the direction that energy was released in. She didn?t just explode up into empty air; when her north face collapsed, it allowed the confined energy of the cryptodome to escape sideways, channeling that release along the ground, where the people and plants and animals were.

The initial blast accelerated from around 50-100 meters per second (112-224mph) at Sugar Bowl dome to at least 156 m/s (349mph) by the time it destroyed seismic station SOS four kilometers (2.5 miles) away. Leaving the high pressure of the vent and encountering the relatively low pressure of the open air, it spread out, covering more than 180?, bearing down on people to the west and east in the South and North Fork Toutle River drainages.

MSH Eyewitnesses

Map showing the area devastated in the directed blast, and locations of witnesses interviewed by USGS geologists. Modified after Figure 35, Rosenbaum and Waitt 1981, in USGS Professional Paper 1250. Image courtesy USGS.

Canadian geology student Catherine Hickson and her husband Paul watched the eruption unfold from fifteen kilometers (9.3 miles) east of the summit as their terrified dogs cowered beside them. At first, the cloud raced smoothly down the crumbled north face of the mountain; then it began billowing eastward, toward them, overtaking the avalanche. Watching it, realizing it would plow right through the river valley between them and the mountain, Catherine thought of two words: ?nu?e ardente,? glowing cloud. An eruption cloud like this had raced down from Mount Pel?e and reduced the thriving seaport of Martinique to ruins, killing nearly thirty thousand; one had descended upon Pompeii from Mount Vesuvius and left no survivors. She knew a car stood no chance. ?So we fled,? she said simply in a letter she wrote to a friend after the eruption.

As her husband sped down a narrow logging road, dodging frantic elk and falling rocks, she snapped a few pictures of the cloud bearing down on them.

Nine kilometers (5.6 miles) west of the summit, Joe Sullivan, his wife, brother-in-law, and friend Mark Dahl fled west down the South Fork Toutle River as the enormous black eruption cloud plowed over the hills. They were speeding at 121-129 kilometers per hour (75-80 mph,) but after less than four minutes, the ash-laden cloud billowed over a ridge ahead of them to the northwest ? it had outraced them down the North Fork Toutle River valley.

Behind them, only eight kilometers (5 miles) west of the exploding volcano, Dave Crockett found himself trapped.

All of them were in line of the blast.

In this schematic of the directed blast, the blast is just beginning to overtake the debris avalanche. It will rapidly accelerate to at least 562 kilometers per hour (349 mph) before slowing to a more sedate 100 kph (62 mph) 25km (15.5 miles) away. Some estimates place its top speed at 650 kph (404 mph). Image courtesy USGS.

The pyroclastic density current of the directed blast would later be described by Hoblitt, Miller and Vallance as ?a subhorizontal fountaining mass of debris and expanding gasses.? Those gasses ripped and plucked existing rock from the debris avalanche and the ground, mixed that rock with the hot young dacite from the cryptodome, and hurled the whole mass along at incredible speeds. Where the cloud passed over the debris avalanche, it entrained more cool material, which reduced its temperature, but to the east and west, it had less loose rock to mix in and remained ferociously hot ? up to 300?C (572?F). Witnesses on Mounts Rainier and Adams watched it flow through valleys and over ridges, hugging the ground, ignoring topography. Where it passed, nothing was left standing. Trees were ripped down, blown away, many of them within 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) of the volcano reduced to splinters and mixed with the debris. Cars, trucks, and logging equipment were sandblasted, battered, scorched: the velocity of the blast cloud combined with its pummeling rocks and logs sometimes punched vehicles hard enough to move or flip them within all but a third of the downed timber zone.

People, animals, and plants caught within this part of the devastated area did not survive. In less than four minutes, a brilliantly sunny morning had turned into a searing, dark, fatal blizzard of stone, and they were gone, most of them asphyxiated by incandescent ash and gasses.

The atmosphere saved the Hicksons and others who had been in the path of the blast cloud to the east and west. As rarefaction (expansion) waves reflected off the atmosphere and became compression waves, the blast was deflected toward the north. It stopped just 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) short of the Hicksons; it missed Dave Crockett by perhaps half that distance. The vagaries of fluid dynamic had steered destruction away from those fortunate few.

But people to the northwest, north, and northeast were still in its path. Nineteen kilometers (11.8 miles) north, in the green river drainage, Al Brooks and his friends Dale and Leslie Davis snapped a photo as the blast cloud rose over a ridge north of Coldwater Creek. Seconds later, they would tell USGS geologists, ?it looked like that whole mountain range had just exploded.? Other witnesses to the north saw the wall of ash and rock, now a few thousand feet high, suddenly rise in front of them. And that blast cloud, ?a boiling mass of rock? just as high as you could see? was bearing directly on them.

Nasdaq to buy Thomson Reuters PR, IR units for $390 million

(Reuters) - Nasdaq OMX Group Inc said on Wednesday it agreed to buy Thomson Reuters Corp's investor relations, public relations and multimedia services units for $390 million, as the exchange operator builds businesses that do not depend on trading.

The all-cash deal will add to Nasdaq's earnings within 12 months of closing, excluding transaction-related costs, the company said.

Nasdaq is looking to sell additional services to the companies that list on its exchanges as a way to draw more revenue from its corporate customers. It already gets more than 70 percent of its revenue from businesses that do not depend on transactions.

The Thomson Reuters units that Nasdaq is buying help companies communicate with investors and media and create and distribute video presentations.

Nasdaq already provides some of these services, but the acquisition will broaden its offerings and make them more global, bringing 7,000 new clients in more than 60 countries.

The units Nasdaq is acquiring generated $233 million of revenue in the 12 months ended September 30. That figure represents about 2 percent of Thomson Reuters' revenue in that period, but more than 7 percent of Nasdaq's revenue.

Nasdaq said it is funding the deal with available cash - the company had $438 million of cash and equivalents on its books at September 30 - and through its $750 million line of credit.

Nasdaq considered buying back shares but decided this deal would offer a higher return to shareholders, Chief Executive Robert Greifeld said on a conference call.

The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2013. Nasdaq has made a binding offer for the units but will not enter a definitive agreement until both companies talk to relevant unions and works councils.

Thomson Reuters has been trying to accelerate growth in the wake of the financial crisis after customers in banking and finance laid off tens of thousands of employees to cut costs.

As part of that effort, it is rejiggering assets in its portfolio.

The units the company is selling "didn't really integrate across the entire platform," said Drew McReynolds, an equity analyst covering telecom and media companies at RBC Capital Markets in Toronto.

Earlier this year, Thomson Reuters sold its healthcare business to private equity firm Veritas Capital for $1.25 billion in cash.

But Thomson Reuters is also buying assets where they help its main businesses. In July, it said it was buying foreign exchange platform FX Alliance Inc for $625 million.

Reuters is a unit of Thomson Reuters.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Barclays Capital advised Nasdaq on the deal. JPMorgan advised Thomson Reuters.

Just 28% of young people read either online or conventional newspapers each day

Dec. 10, 2012 ? A study at the Jaume I University in Castell?n has verified the decrease in press consumption among young people between the ages of 16 and 30 years, which now stands at 28.8%. What is more, three out of every four individuals within this age bracket use social networking sites more than the television to get up to date.

News consumption habits among young people have changed radically in recent years. Since the beginning of the 21st century, various studies have indicated a decrease in readership of printed newspapers along with a constant fall in young readers.

"Just 28.8% of this entire population group read newspapers on a daily basis. On the other hand, the internet is playing more and more of a leading role, with special reference to social networks, in terms of news consumption amongst people aged between 16 and 30 years," as explained by Andreu Casero Ripoll?s, Lecturer at the Department of Communication Sciences of the Jaume I University in Castell?n and author of study published in the 'Comunicar' journal.

The study indicates that 77.4% of youngsters within this age range use social networks to keep informed and, as Casero states, "they enjoy a higher percentage that any other form of media, even beating the television. This is an important revelation."

The results expose a real problem for newspapers that are loosing their young readers. This has a twofold negative effect: lost audience and the ability to capture the next generation.

Unwilling to pay for news

The study was based on a total of 549 surveys conducted in Catalonia, Spain on the young people of different cities, all of whom had different levels of educational attainment.

The majority of those surveyed strongly refused to pay for access to current news. Only 6.2% said they would be willing to subscribe to some form of media source.

"This refusal goes even further in that the majority (76.3%) would visit another free webpage if their favourite internet news source started to require payment. Only 17.1% would stop their internet news consumption if there were no free means," adds the researcher.

These figures are very low and cause a problem for the media when it comes to selling their product, both on paper and on the internet. They also affect their new business model in the digital age.

However, young people attach high civil value to the news and take an interest in keeping informed. "It seems that the way in which journalistic information is conceived is changing. The door has been opened to understanding the news as a public service that must always be available for free whenever the reader wants," explains the author.

News consumption gender gap

In terms of gender, men have a higher leaning towards journalistic information, they consult a higher number of sources when putting together their "information diet" and they have a higher leaning towards paying for news.

Women on the other hand place higher value than men on the importance of being well-informed in order to be good citizens. "They put a higher civil value on the news than men. On a scale of 0 to 10, women gave this question a score of 8.4, compared to men who gave 7.97," ensures the expert.

According to the researcher, newspapers should look for strategies to reconnect with young people, who are highly interested in the news but not using information that fails to respond to their needs and interests. "Likewise, to reach out to young people, journalistic media should use social networks intensely since they are the preferred method of keeping informed amongst this population group," he concludes.

The study predicts that without active strategies adapted to the consumption habits or news conceptions of young people, journalistic media will face serious problems with their business models in the future and they will run the risk of disappearing.

Black women battle obesity with dialogue, action

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Nicole Ari Parker was motivated by frustration. For Star Jones, it was a matter of life or death. Toni Carey wanted a fresh start after a bad breakup.

All three have launched individual campaigns that reflect an emerging priority for African-American women: finding creative ways to combat the obesity epidemic that threatens their longevity.

African-American women have the highest obesity rate of any group of Americans. Four out of five black women have a body mass index above 25 percent, the threshold for being overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. By comparison, nearly two-thirds of Americans overall are in this category, the CDC said.

Many black women seem to be unaffected by being generally heavier than other Americans.

Calorie-rich, traditional soul food is a staple in the diets of many African-Americans, and curvy black women are embraced positively through slang praising them as "thick" with a "little meat on their bones," or through songs like the Commodore's "Brick House" or "Bootylicious" by Destiny's Child. A study by the Kaiser Family Foundation and The Washington Post earlier this year found that 66 percent of overweight black women had high self-esteem, while 41 percent of average-sized or thin white women had high self-esteem.

Still, that doesn't mean black women reject the need to become healthier.

Historically black, all-female Spelman College in Atlanta is disbanding its NCAA teams and devoting those resources to a campus-wide wellness program. In an open letter announcing Spelman's "wellness revolution," president Beverly Daniel Tatum cited a campus analysis that found many of Spelman's 2,100 students already have high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes or other chronic ailments.

"Spelman has an opportunity to change the health trajectory of our students and, through their influence, the communities from which they come," Tatum's letter said.

Jones, who underwent open heart surgery in 2010 at age 47 and now urges awareness about heart disease among black women, was met by an overflow crowd earlier this year when she convened a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation panel on black women and obesity.

"We have to get ourselves out of being conditioned to think that using soft words so we don't hurt peoples' feelings is doing them any favor," Jones said. "Curvy, big-boned, hefty, full-figured, fluffy, chubby. Those are all words designed to make people feel better about themselves. That wasn't helpful to me."

Jones once embraced being large and fabulous, at 5 feet 5 inches tall and 300 pounds. But under that exterior, she said, she was morbidly obese, suffering from extreme fatigue, nausea, lightheadedness, heart palpitations and blurred vision. Now, she advises women to make simple changes such as reducing salt intake, exercising 30 minutes a day, quitting smoking, controlling portion sizes and making nutritious dietary choices.

Nutritionist and author Rovenia M. Brock, known professionally as Dr. Ro, agrees with Jones. She said getting active is only about 20 percent of the fight against obesity. The rest revolves around how much people eat. "Our plates are killing us," she said.

Brock said "food deserts," or urban areas that lack quality supermarkets, are a real obstacle. She suggested getting around that by carpooling with neighbors to stores in areas with higher-quality grocery options or buying food in bulk. She also suggested growing herbs and vegetables in window-box gardens.

"Stop focusing on what's not there, or what you think is not there," Brock said. "We have to get out of this wimpy, 'woe is me' mentality."

While first lady Michelle Obama has encouraged exercise through her "Let's Move" campaign targeting childhood obesity, the spark for this current interest among black women may have been comments last year by Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, who observed publicly that women must stop allowing concern about their hair to prevent them from exercising.

Some black women visit salons as often as every two weeks, investing several hours and anywhere from $50 to several hundreds of dollars each visit ? activity that, according to the Black Owned Beauty Supply Association, helps fuel a $9 billion black hair care and cosmetics industry.

In an interview during a health conference in Washington last week, Benjamin said the damage sweat can inflict on costly hairstyles can affect women's willingness to work out, and she hopes to change that. She goes to beauty industry conferences to encourage stylists to create exercise-friendly hairdos.

"I wouldn't say we use it as an excuse, we use it as a barrier," Benjamin said. "And that's not one of the barriers anymore. We're always going to have problems with balancing our lives, but we could take that one out."

Parker, an actress, understands this dilemma well. Out of personal frustration over maintaining both her workout and her hair, she created "Save Your Do" Gymwrap ? a headband that can be wrapped around the hair in a way that minimizes sweat and preserves hairstyles.

"Not just as a black woman, but as a woman, since the beginning of time, beauty has been our responsibility," Parker said in an interview. Because of that, she said, exercise has become linked with vanity instead of health.

"We've turned exercise into a weight-loss regimen," Parker said. "No. Exercise is about being grateful for the body you have and sustaining the life you have. ... Take all the hype out of the exercise and think of it as brushing your teeth."

With their mutual family histories of diabetes and high blood pressure in mind, Carey, 28, and her sorority sister Ashley Hicks, 29, co-founded the running club Black Girls Run. Carey also considered it a new beginning after a bad breakup and a move across country. Since 2009, Black Girls Run has amassed 52,000 members who serve as a support system for runners.

Black Girls Run has about 60 groups nationwide that coordinate local races in Atlanta, New York, San Francisco, Washington, D.C, Houston and Greensboro, N.C. Most groups run at least five times a week. Next month, the running club will take its first "Black Girls Run ? Preserve the Sexy" tour to cities with high obesity rates. The tour includes health and fitness clinics with information on nutrition, hair maintenance and running gear.

"We found that when you want to get healthy and when you want to be active, it's intimidating," Carey said. "You don't know where to start. There's a little coaxing that has to go along with that."

Parker said once African-American women place value on their bodies and longevity, everything else will follow. It costs her nothing, she said, to walk around an outdoor track with her husband, actor Boris Kodjoe, or run up and down stairs with her headphones.

"One good step breeds another one," Parker said. "You're going to have one less margarita, one less scoop of Thanksgiving macaroni ... and yet you're not doing anything fanatical or dramatic."

Chris Ford: West Auckland tornado comes at time of shift in National Government's attitude to climate change

Yesterday's West Auckland tornado came at a time when National is pursuing a rightwards drift in its climate change policies.

And, ironically, it struck inside the heart of John Key's Helensville electorate.

Was the weather trying to send a message to Key? Perhaps it was given National's backing of a "voluntary" target for cutting carbon emissions by 2050. This change in government policy, ahead of a Dubai summit on climate change, means that New Zealand is now intent on following Canada, India, China and other big polluters in taking a less proactive approach to climate change than previously.

Yesterday's tragic storm also reminded me of the complete hypocrisy of government policy when it comes to meeting our international obligations. On the one hand, we zealously negotiate secretive trade pacts, such as the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), which we will then enforce with massive zeal. Conversely, our National Government doesn't like big corporation unfriendly treaties like those pertaining to the environment or human rights.

To me, the need of humanity to live in a more socially just, climatically stable world is more important than profit maximisation.

I don't think that Key or National would agree with my arguments but perhaps this is something that other New Zealanders should ponder on and, hopefully, place pressure on Government to do something about - or failing that, the next Labour-led Government.
