Yesterday's West Auckland tornado came at a time when National is pursuing a rightwards drift in its climate change policies.
And, ironically, it struck inside the heart of John Key's Helensville electorate.
Was the weather trying to send a message to Key? Perhaps it was given National's backing of a "voluntary" target for cutting carbon emissions by 2050. This change in government policy, ahead of a Dubai summit on climate change, means that New Zealand is now intent on following Canada, India, China and other big polluters in taking a less proactive approach to climate change than previously.
Yesterday's tragic storm also reminded me of the complete hypocrisy of government policy when it comes to meeting our international obligations. On the one hand, we zealously negotiate secretive trade pacts, such as the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), which we will then enforce with massive zeal. Conversely, our National Government doesn't like big corporation unfriendly treaties like those pertaining to the environment or human rights.
To me, the need of humanity to live in a more socially just, climatically stable world is more important than profit maximisation.
I don't think that Key or National would agree with my arguments but perhaps this is something that other New Zealanders should ponder on and, hopefully, place pressure on Government to do something about - or failing that, the next Labour-led Government.
